If you're talkin' small stream, as in brook trout fishing, I use a royal wulff or elk hair caddis almost exclusively, and lately I've been dropping a soft hackle PT.

Honestly, once they start looking up, no need to drop anything. Try putting on two EHC hahaha! I drop the soft hackle just for fun, and its fun to see how many will take it compared to how many slam the dry.

The twin tail madonna is the best crayfish pattern that I've used. No real need to scale it down for trout either, you can fish Size 2-6 for both species. Works great on a jig hook with a tungsten cone too.

I watched the tutorial from Youtube provided above. I think he makes it way to thick, but whatever floats your boat.

I prefer a nice tapered body for mine. I don't even put cotton/dubbing under my weight, I just add lead and smash it down. Works well enough for me, but I do know/admit the way Joe advocates tying it gives more action.

FrequentTyer's list covers most of it. For woolly buggers and similar trout streamers a 3xl hook will get the job done. I tie most of my buggers in #8 and #10. Definitely buy some scud type hooks like a tmc 2487. Lighter wire models a re great for emergers and the heavier ones will suffice for many types of nymphs. Regarding red color on cicadas. Some of them have red eyes. But that is the only red that I think you will see on the cicadas. Some of them have orange eyes.

Again, look at the photos of the bugs. And when they start emerging, which I've heard has begun already in some places, look at the actual bug.

I have never paid even close to 17 cents for a TMC. I buy them in bulk all the time and get an unbelievable price and the quality is top notch. They bronzing is perfect too. I am a fan of TMC. That is all I will tie with.

Unless the trout are really keyed in on an exact match of the fly it won't matter if the size is a bit off, as long as it's not too big. In other words if you have the right color and the pattern is right you'll catch...

Make sure the wing will float the fly once it becomes wet. The body should stay well into the water. If you can't float it, you can't see it and that makes it really hard to fish. I do a lot more snowshoe hare's foot now that Jonas has preached the gospel to me enough that I listened. I still use CDC, just use enough so that it's somewhat dense. Pre-waterproof it. You should be able to soak-up your fly then flick it dry. You should be able ...
