I pulled up maccaffertium mediopunctatum yesterday and there's A LOT of similarities visually to this fly. The mottling of the wing looks just a hair different, and maybe even body thickness. It is pretty darn close though.

Wow, I've seen some confirmed e. vitreus's before, but that color is something else on that one. Usually yellowish pink for me. So, maybe a little pinker, but still easy to mistake for invaria if not for # of tails.

Here's a MB from Penns. Captured April 28. Was on stream from the 26th through the 28th. Heavy hatches all 3 days, mid afternoon. But a spinner fall occurred on the 26th only. The 27th and 28th were much colder, which is probably why the spinners were absent.

<img src='http://i58.photobucket.com/albums/g259/pcray1231/4-26%20through%2028-2012/IMG_0097.jpg' class='left' border='0' alt='Original Image' onload="JavaScri...

Yesterday I hit a pretty strong hatch of Blue-winged Olives, about size 18. It's not unusual for them to be on this time of year. But they started so early this year, and people have been seeing March Browns for quite a while now, so I was surprised to see so many BWOs still hatching.

The hatches started extremely early, but it seems like they are stretched out, hatching over a longer period than most years.

It's a...

Even if the spinner fall doesn't happen or you are pre-spinner fall, tie on a spinner and see what happens. I've caught many fish when the spinners haven't started yet or not at all because the trout are "anticipating" the easy meal.

Keep in mind that when Stone Flies hatch they migrate to rocks either in stream or along the banks, so it is important to fish the edges of current along the banks if trout are taking stone fly nymphs. Make sure the drift of the fly is complete before picking up and casting again.

Neat.
Some warm water rivers really have a diverse insect population. They look like a clinger mayfly nymph nearly ready to hatch. March Browns?

I found these guys on the Perkiomen this past Sunday. I probably don't have enough information here for an ID, but I thought the pictures showing the cases might of interest to some. There were hundreds of them in the calmer water near the banks and they were actively moving around. I have not seem this many in gravel/sand cases before, but maybe I just wasn't looking. I picked a few up and dropped them, and found them to sink quickly. Their...

Approximate size is important, and can and should easily be added by most "ID" threads. But top-notch pictures are difficult for anyone to get streamside. I held my 14 up to a natural at Neshannock last Friday and it was MAYBE a hair too short. 16 is too small IMO. I think I have a few 12's in my box, but pretty much fish 14's.

I think once the fish get keyed in on the naturals, especially with a hatch of this proportion, then they start getting picky. Too large is an instant turn off, just right is always good, but sometimes a size too small will work just fine too.
