BelAir, I;m slightly different in my approach - I like to keep the popper moving faster than the sunnies and bluegills can get to it and yet slow enough for the bass to nail it. I'm now looking forward to the end of June when I can target them legally.

A parachute is a jack of all trades, master of none. Whether the fish require mastery depends entirely on the fish. Some do, some don't.

But in situations where perfect, exact matches are not necessary, a parachute is probably my favorite pattern.

Hah remember when I said I was abusive? Well I damaged a guide today. Trying to get a fly out of a tree and I ripped half the guide off. I was able to twist it back into place kinda but not really. But I don't care, because after trying like hell since early April to catch a trout on a fly rod, I did today. I am happy.
http://imgur.com/mbhncsW.jpg

First trout on a dry - always fun. If you are the type to write things down, do it. It is fun, years later, to take a look at your notes and remember those times on the stream.

You can catch more by dragging yur parachute, just don't get caught. Only those from Bragg get away with it. HA HA!

Even setting up your own gear needs to be checked often. Lines rubbing on rocks, knots getting loose around the fly, are both succesful at helping someone lose fish.

Also gear degrades over time. I had a bass top water popper that the same bass nailed 3 times and each time I went to set the hook it ...

Osprey hit it on the head, confidence in a fly is some times the only difference in catching and not catching. Ugly works at times and I don't think anyone has ever caught a fish on any fly and after the fish whacking it the fly remained pretty. I have caught a lot of fish after the prettiness of the fly had been worn off by current, rocks or other fish.

Of course as you tie your goal should be to tie the fly in the right ...

About 12 years back, I laughed at the fly fishers in my area. Then one day I tried it out. Didn't catch a dam thing which made it a challenge and I kept returning to the challenge. Now that I am catching trout, bass, muskies, etc with the flyrod i am HOOKED, and enjoy it much more than spin or bait casting. And from time to time, I will hook a fish and give a kid in the area a chance to try it out.

I normally start with around 3 feet of 8 or 10 lb spiderwire. to a 4 feet of 4lb spiderwire to a dry fly and then up to 3 1/2 feet of 2lb Flouro to the nymph. This usually give me the best set up. I will normally change out the 2lb flouro if it gets a knot in it within 2 feet or less of the nymph. My two lb flouro is tied to the hook shaft of the dryfly.

Happens to me on occasion. If fish are rising in slow water, cast accurately and let it sit.

Occasionally it works, especially if fish are in a no holds barred frenzy. More often, a fish comes up and stares down the fly for about 2 minutes before refusing it. Maybe safer for the flyline in the yard. Ponds tend to have alot of chemicals that can degrade you flyline.

It's alot of fun to practice in the yard with squirrels. have them investigate your fly and than you give it a good tug and watch them jump like crazy.

Bug eggs, fish eggs, bugs, fish.
The spinner is the spent, dead or dying end of the bug's life. Usually ended by the process of laying eggs (Females anyway). Grannoms are the perfect example. I'm convinced that my increase in small stream fly fishing played a MAJOR role in my weight loss this past year. I'm a huge supporter of the idea that fly fishing is indeed exercise!

The first time I fished with Sal, we went to a small Lanc freestoner. I was about 345lbs and struggled desperately to keep up. I fished that stream on Saturday and rocked it. No problems at all. Love it. Its my favorite kind of fishing.

I like muddlers. Nice thick profile and good action. But you gotta use a lot of weight, they don't sink very quickly.

Overall, I'm a fan of heavily weighted sculpins.

As for a cheap I would personally say go to wal mart buy a eagle claw black eagle 4/5w $22w tax, order a cabelllas wind river 3/4 reel $26 shipped and buy a good line for it. I really like the rio avid trout 4wt on that rod myself. But it is the rio grand taper with out the fancy slick additives. Or maybe go with a rio gold 5wt line just to soften up the rod/slow the action down a little bit.

Any ways thats my .02...

Doesn't sound like you are ready to drop the dough. So don't fish your old rod til you feel compelled to spend on a new. You may find new reasons....hookset, casting distance, accuracy, vanity?

In the meantime, save some cash along the way and analyze what you don;t like about your cahill. Certainly there are reasons that more expensive rods can draw you. You just have to find the ones that fit your cast and desired experience.
