We had a few boats out on the trout water this weekend, and the reports from all captains are that the river up high is fishing really well. Sunday, with the dark, rainy weather that it brought, was the day to be out. Though the cold and rain seemed to put the bugs down, there is plenty of time for that still, and days like this come only so often, days that are made for throwing streamers at trout.

On opening day I fished with a few friends on the Breeches. About 9:30 the Grannoms started to come off and for about 3 hours the wild Browns eat them up. Everyone did well. Spawning activity is going strong. The steady water flow on the Salmon River have helped get them set up in most spawning areas including diversions off the Wires and Trout Brook area.

As for the tribs, they are in good shape and most are holding fish in fair numbers. Steady snow melt has helped the tribs to this point. All fish we've caught in the tribs are fresh or actively spawning, no drop backs yet.

As a quick update for those looking to fish the river, it looks like the USACE are beginning to draw the lake down, so they've bumped the daily flows up to 500 cfs. For now at least--until the lake runs out of cold water--that will keep the water temps good down to below Ohiopyle.

I was on the upper Yough in MD above Deep Creek last week. The browns had reached their limit there. They were just floating down the river half dead. Tailed a 24"+ brown right below Swallow Falls that was barely hanging on. Moved it into Mud Creek which was much cooler. Doubt it made it. Going to be a rough year for the non-tailwater fisheries unless we get some significant rain soon.

I ran into an PBFC officer below the outflow in the middle of a blizzard in early March. Only time I've ever been checked there. He said he patrols everything in the Laural Highlands area. Dunbar Cr. to Laurel Hill Cr. That's a lot of area to cover for one person.

Fished this afternoon with Nick Raftas, we found rising fish to Tan Caddis and Hendrickson wet flies underneath. There were a few Hendricksons and Quill Gordons around. Caddis and Craneflies were hatching the most.

Stream was still crowded with fishermen. When we found a spot that was not being fished, we would find rising fish. Water was low but temps were 56-58 degrees.
