Surfer Cast

I shared this in another post about "Ninja" style brook trout fishing up in the thick stuff. The "Surfer Cast" is the name i use to describe what i sometimes do when room is limited and you need an upstream cast of 20' or so , this can work with wet flies or dry , a bow and arrow cast is also an option but try this , let out a rod lengths of line/leader , allow the fly to swing downstream of you and drag on the surface like a surfer , with the rod tip pointed downstream at the fly , and every thing surfing well on the top , turn your head upstream , aim , and flick everything towards your target , finishing off by pointing your rod tip at where you want the fly to go. With a surprisingly little amount of practice you can get good accuracy and very controlled landing and drift. For Those of you that like to fish small , tight mountain streams for native brook trout , this cast will sometimes save the day. P.S. The most unforgiving thing on the planet is a rhododendron leaf.

It's a great way to cast in many spots.

I call it a water haul. Good tip osprey.

I call it a water haul as well. I probably use it most while nymphing. More than once I've caught a fish waiting for the rod to load.
