Haven't read this book in twenty years, but, as I recall, Lafontaine (RIP) discusses the pros and cons of using various differently colored flies at different hours of the day. He based his conclusions on a great deal of scuba-based underwater empirical observations. My recollection of his findings boils down to this: Middle of the day, fishing under a green forested canopy - fish a green fly. Late afternoon as the sun is setting and the ambient light takes on an orange glow - fish an orange or red fly.

Back in the summer at the "Newbie Jam" on the LL I fished the afternoon thru the Heritage section esp. the "Kids Pool". Those trout had been fished over and pounded all day long. In about a half hour I caught a half dozen of those trout on my own beadhead "Micro" GW. Cathy G.(a member here) is my witness. She saw it with her own eyes. They(GW) work on stocked and wild fish both. It is one of my go-to flies for summer. Now if I could just get Shane to learn how to fish one!

He's figured it out. I hooked him up with some honeybug inchworm chenille.

At the casting comp practice session up on Spring, he caught 27 fish. Old Lefty caught 4.

We've created a monster!

Ed,

If you keep pumping up Shane, he'll start thinking he's good and he will enter fishing competitions.

Do they allow green weenies in those comps? If so, I'm in!

He told me they had 50+ fish on lower Beaverkill yesterday including a 22" brown and he had his azz handed to him by a bow that went ape.

Yep. Me and some friends were on Spring Creek below Benner Hatchery one fall day years ago. We were sight casting to feeding browns and hammering them on green weenies.

And yes, I know people who turn their nose up to the green weenie, mostly the tail, but they do work. I have had success with them a lot on freshly stocked fish.
