I thought I would find some good flycasting videos on YouTube. These are starring my casting heros, Lefty Kreh and Joan Wulff.

Perhaps the Greatest Fly Caster in Herstory
A cute bit of hero worship, but worth watching. I don't know if the misspelling in the title is intentional.

Thanks Pad. I could use a little formality in my casting. I'm pretty much self taught. I can spend a little time in the heat of the summer watching these videos and pick up a few pointers. I think the video is probably better than the written word to teach casting skills.

Thanks Pad, I enjoyed all the videos. In one clip, Lefty said that a surgeon he spoke to believes that over 35% of fly fishermen 50 or older, that fish a lot, have torn rotator cuffs. I’m in that 35%. It aint no joke! I’ve been trying to change my fly-casting more to Lefty’s style in order to keep fishing. On real bad days (pain), I cast left handed. If when you go out and fish all day and say you “cast your arm off” – you’re really not kidding. Just a word to the wise.

Yeah, I remembered your rotor cuff injury. It was what made me think of looking for these. I think Lefty once said something to the effect of "if it's work, you're doing it wrong". So I thought reviewing his style might help. I've never seen a casting DVD by him, but Joan Wulff's is really, really good.

Hey,
I've found that being a self taought caster is all about teaching ourselves the mistakes first!!!!!!!!!

Anyways, a good way to find out what these mistakes are is to have a buddy video you while your using a variety of casts, then critique them together, you both learn and try to fix the problems.

Savethe tape and do it again in awhile- maybe a week, or longer, as you keep checking back, you see yourself improving and build confidence, now your not afraid of hanging up in that tree 18" above the water, and get your cast to the trout.

Nothing is better than spending a little hard earned cash on a couple hours with a good instructor either.

Good fishin,
Scott

When I was first starting, some dude in some fly shop gave me Saltwater Flycasting: 10 Steps to Distance and Power Video dvd by George Roberts Jr. Even though it is titled for saltwater is a great tool for all casters I think, it will definately make you better, specifically if you want to learn to cast farther.
