Bob has a ton of stuff at the Classic Fly Fisherman. Was just in there the other day. Pretty sure he has a Medalist or two.

If you haven't found one as yet, for a cleaned, lubed and set to LHW or RHW as needed, my price shipped for a 1494 made in USA with plastic latch cover is $40 if paid by check. It has paint rubs and evidence of use, but no gouges or bends. Appearance is 7.5 to 8 out of 10. Mechanical is excellent.

I am not selling models with round line guard and metal latch cover, etc at the moment, but if I did they would be $160.00 or higher.

If it must be American, look for a DA model (149xDA), you'll pay about $25-30 on ebay all day long.

Earlier American reels are available, but may or may not be reversible. Generally speaking, any reel without a two letter year code on it is going to be American made, the earlier non-reversible models will be identifiable by the six rivets holding the spool together.

If, however, you don't care about country of origin, any CJ or AK series will do. CJ were Japanese made, and followed the DA model, and AK were Chinese made and followed the CJ until cease of production (2012).

Functionally, there is no difference in a DA/CJ/AK coded reels.

The latter Asian sourced reels will cost half the price of an American made reel.

As to round line guards: They certainly look nicer, but are only a negative as far as usability is concerned. A round guard is not reversible (with parts, retrieve is; but position of the guard is not) and threading your line through the smaller hole versus the larger rectangle guards is an exercise in suck.

If being "period correct" is your thing, a round guard is also incorrect. Depending on the the age of your Fenwick rod, it would either be a DA or CJ coded reel. I'm assuming the rod is a FF755.

gfen - you are correct FF755. I'm not fanatical about the origins of the reel. I'm just trying to recreate a rod that was stolen from my Jeep back in the day on the Brandywine. I'm crazy busy at work but hope to look at everything posted here and get myself a Xmas gift.

Why not contact the company directly to get the correct info instead of relying on some amatuer reelogist poasting on the Interweb.

Because they were discontinued in 2012. Amateur reelologists are the only game in town.
