Looks like algae to me. Not qualified to say what type from the pic.

I just had split pea soup for lunch. It looked quite similar.

I'm gonna guess the picture is filamentous algae.

It is either dead algae or rock snot from the looks of it.

Filamentous green algae, don't know what species, but if it's not rock snot, it's pretty common. Where'd you see it?

I saw it on a Carbon county stream. There wasn't a lot of it, just in a couple spots.

It doesn't look like didymo but it would not hurt to make the PFBC aware of it.

didymo is unusual in that its not slippery like most algae. simply grab a handful and you'll know what it is.

I didn't know that didymo is not slippery, but I wouldn't say it is unusual.

Never seen rock snot, but I am familiar with filamentous algae, and it isn't slippery either. It looks slippery, but if you grab a handful, you will see it is fibrous and kind of like wet wool.

But I never tried walking on it when it is present on rocks to see how slippery it is.

It's very common in ponds. It grows on the bottom, and eventually breaks lose from trapped gasses and floats to the surface.

Can't say that I have ever seen it in flowing water, but I'd imagine it can be found in slow water on streams.

Lots of info on the net on this.

To me it looks like filimentous algae that is dead, dying, or/and has a little bit of silt covering it which is common.

It's still just a guess though.

Thanks for the link! I appreciate all of the input on this. I just didn't want it to be an issue for this stream.
