I have read that Vince Marinaro and Charlie Fox knew where individual fished lived within certain stretches of their beloved Letort. I was always impressed by this, and wondered if those big browns actually did stay in the same spot for extended periods of time. Well today I found out. I wasn't planning on fishing the Letort today. I was going to hit some little brookie streams, but as I got in the general vicinity of Carlisle, the lure of the Letort pulled me in. I parked at my favorite section of stream, and set out in search of a good morning. Catching fish would just be icing on the cake. Well, last week I posted about an outing I had on the Letort, and I was fishing a stretch close to where I had fished then. After catching a couple small browns, I decided to hike up to the hole where I had that big brown break my hook. I thought about Marinaro and Fox as I rigged up the scud, and thought, that fish is long gone by now. It wasn't. The first drift through the hole produced a slight twitch in my rod. I set the hook. A second later, that massive brown trout that had snapped my hook last week vaulted three feet out of the water. It then dove down, shaking violently, and scraped it's head, back and forth, trying to free itself. 5 more times it jumped. I kept the pressure on. My arm was starting to tire, and my net was too small to capture the tiring fish,so I reached down and landed the beast after a fight that had to have lasted 4 minutes. I guess I'm a believer now - find the home of those big boys, and that's where they'll be.

True in limestoners and others that don't vary much, seasonally.
Not so much the case where runoff is a big factor.
Nice fish,..It was fifty years ago but I can remember the same fish rising at the same spots on the Letort nite after nite.

Heckuva nice fish - coming from Letort I'd regard that as one that would be tough to beat for a season. Real beauty. Yuh gotta love scuds.

Nice fish! I've yet to fish the Letort, but it's coming. By my estimates that fish is around 21". That would have been a walkoff for me.

Lonewolve - It was a size 14. I usually use Mike Heck's simple shrimp pattern, except I tie it with thin skin instead of swiss straw on the back. I usually use size 12, and sometimes even size 10. I figure those big browns need some extra motivation to move out of their hides.

It's great to see how fish change over time. Large fish like that especially will take over a stream location and defend it. This season I caught a fish in that class in April, then again in June. She grew an inch plus and gained a lot of weight on the abundant hatches.

The real challenge is catching the same limestone stream fish twice in the same day.

Very nice klingy.

I've had a rather unusual encounter with a large palomino on the yough river this year. It holds in one certain spot that is not very deep - 1-2 feet at the most. And of course it is certainly easy to spot - and has been rising every time I've been there. Which is kinda odd from my previous experience with palominos .

Anyway, the 1st time I stopped there - which was last month- it was rising to sulphers. And I managed to raise it twice, but just couldn't hook it. It seemed to change it's mind at the last split second, and just barely swiped the hook.
I went back a few weeks later, and finally hooked it on a caddis. It tore upstream, taking my whole fly line and putting me into my backing. Then after about a 5 minute fight, the hook just popped out.
Went back a third time earlier this week, and hooked it again - on a BWO. And was finally able to net it - 19" with a beautiful pink stripe down its side.
And after releasing it, it went right back to the same spot again
