Not trying to take attention to the steelhead JAM thread, wish I could go but have other plans, but what's the news on steelhead? Is it worth checking out a stream or two this weekend? There has already been some caught in Rocky River in OH, but what about the eastern OH rivers and PA streams?

Erie streams are highly Spate streams...meaning they fish based on water fluctuation from precipitation events.I don't know how the flows are out there, but it never hurts to just do a lil looking, and if the water is flowing well go fo it, you should call around and see what shops are saying in Ohio look for these:http://www.madriveroutfitters.com/

In Pennsylvania

I had my mind on steelhead this morning! It is nice and cold out down here in Central PA and boy did it feel like a nice Fall morning of Steelhead fishing in Erie!!!!

I think the rain is going to hold out up there into October for the first good run. I am thinking that could make for a great run at that time of year and hopefully a great year. It has been 3-4 years since I have experienced a good run up there. The 2007 run was fantastic.

Here's a few resources I use for steelhead.

First off... if you head to FishErie.com, then take it with a grain of salt. I'm saying nothing else besides that.

Lows in the 50's and LOTS of rain are what typically get things moving. Average time frame for the first run is the last week in Sept or the first in October.

Here's the guage for walnut. I don't like the Elk one because it's technically in a small trib to elk.

Fishable water for me is anywhere between 150-300cfs.... to get the fish rolling we probably need a washer of 500+ to get a GOOD run in.

last but certainly not least is a visual help.

I've heard and seen reports of a few fish caught, but it is by no means close to time to fish up there unless you live 2 min from the creek. We still need lots of rain and cooler temps for a decent amount of time before it's on.

Ryan

Thanks for the replies. I know its not looking good, but I still might go up there though to scratch the itch. Until fall stockings, Erie is actually much closer than other trout streams. Worst case I'll check out Presque Isle again. When I go up there and reality sets in I won't go back till October, I just have the itch to go now though!

ryguyfi, thanks for the link to the webcam! That'll definitely help for future trips.

I spent the day scouting the PA tribs today. There are a few fish around....but it's a very few. The PA tribs have very poor flow right now. I hooked into a couple of fish that were in faster flows, but for the most part, the steelhead are holding in deep slow holes and ignoring the fishermen. The only real value in hitting the tribs at this point is scouting the changes to the bottom structure since last Springs floods. Elk and 20 Mile have changed a lot. I always make a point of getting out and walking the streams this time of year while the water is low. If I find a fish or 2 it's great, but the scouting really pays dividends for me later when the flows are finally up. Hope this helps

Well, there are some in the streams, but we NEED RAIN! Spotted probably about 20 or so fish in Walnut, saw some jumps in Elk, saw a nice one jump a few times at the mouth of Trout Run. One guy caught one at Walnut, and saw another one caught at Trout, but very few fish in the stream itself. Also saw a lake trout washed up along the beach which was interesting.

Here is another good Ohio report. It is specific to the Rocky River and updated every Thursday. They always have some good info as to what to expect here in Ohio.

They are waiting on you. If the rain happens, there should be a good push about the Erie tribs.

This is the type of forecast that should get some things moving.

http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/USPA0509:1:US

My guess is that the weekend of the 1st and 2nd will be the first big steel weekend.
