SOLUNAR - and the possible effect on PAFF Spring Jam Dates

ok, just thought I might ask: when considering what weekend to have the spring jam, do the almighty soothsayers consult the solunar charts or is it always just the weekend before memorial day weekend?

not complaining. in fact I am stoked for the jam and the opportunity to meet some many of you.

I am just curious if anybody else consults the solunar charts and if it played any roll in determining the date...BTW...the dates look great!

my pap always had a chart up every year down in his fishing den and I always laughed at it. I don't laugh at it anymore, I have an app on my phone and I have to say, I think he was on to something.

...just saying...

Almost always ends up the weekend before Memorial Day. It is just a really good time to be fly fishing in Central Pennsylvania. Some of the scheduling depends on the CG and available accomodations.

As for the lunar cycle, I always wondered whether the phases or position effected trout or aquatic insects, but have never even heard it theorized about.

no, the dates are chosen to coincide with biblical rains and flooding, probably using the old testament as the main resource, but also relying on newer information from various secret cults and such.

Tim,
To my knowledge, solunar tables have never played a role in any PAFF events. That's not to say you shouldn't consult them. Speaking purely for myself, I regard solunar tables as nonsense. They were very popular back in the post war years, esp after the writings of John Alden Knight who put forth his theory that moon phases affect fish and animal activity. I've got some back issues of old outdoor magazines from the 50s and 60s and they really play up solunar tables. When I was a kid I followed them closely and found no influence on fishing success and have long since abandoned them. As the saying goes, your mileage may vary. There are still some folks who swear by 'em.

I've never really dived into it. However, night fishermen swear by the effect of the moon, and I do think it makes sense for their application.

That said, there's no hocus pocus there. It's simply how bright it is out. Clouds do the same thing as a new moon. Or you just look at moonrise and moonset times and find a time when neither the sun nor moon is in the sky.

I doubt it has much effect on daytime fishing (except ocean, with tides), but in late May, us guys that fish the evening hatches till we can't see any longer definitely straddle the line between day and night fishermen, so it could have some effect on us.

Solunar tables do not apply in the midst of a monsoon.

Just sayin'.

I've never found any correlation between the solunar tables and good flyfishing. If the waters in decent shape, and the flys are hatching - everythings A- OK in my experience.

As a side note - I've read many times that dark moonless nights are best for night fishing.
However, I've had some very good fishing on nights when a bright full moon lit up the stream so much, that I could see the fish take my fly on the surface

Watch the cows and check the Solunar Tables.
In salt water the moon rise and set work for me. Sometimes.
Just bring 2 rain coats to the jam. GG

Tim, I follow the V.A.C.A.T.I.O.N. tables very closely. I have found the fishing to be great during this time..........and very bad during this time, at times........Biggie :)

Musky fisherman live by it. I didnt put to much stock in it. Until I started looking at our best days and they always came on full moon. A 4 hook up night between me and 2 friends made me a believer.

If its a full moon the crazies are out that includes the finsherman and the fish.
