Literally stumbled across this garter snake en route to a brookie stream this morning. I was surprised to see it eating a toad- I always thought toads were poisonous to predators but I did some research and apparently garter snakes are resistant to the toxins. Took this pic and was on my way. I really should do more early morning trips, as I also saw two red foxes each from about 20-30 ft away and a bunch of deer.

LOL McSneek.

Fishing was just ok, only brought four to hand compared to 17 the last time I fished this place (early June). I wasn't expecting much given how dry it's been, but I've barely been able to fish at all the past 3 weeks so I just wanted to get out. Didn't take a temp but the water felt pretty darn cold, maybe low 60s at most. Almost wanted to take a swim by late morning.

Seriously?

Assuming you're serious, if a 2 foot garter snake scares you so much you should stay out of the BIG SCARY WOODS!

If you hate snakes so much just avoid them and leave them be,they sure don't want to be near you as they are not aggresive for the most part.

I've always thought it was weird that my dog can't smell toads. She will scrutinize every crumbled leaf on our driveway, hoping that it's a toad. One of the few creatures that a dog has trouble detecting.

During bad garter snake years, the toads head to our driveway and sidewalk to try to distance themselves from the stealthy snakes.

Dear Barry,

Come to think of it despite the high heat and humidity were suffering this summer I haven't seen many toads in my backyard.

Maybe that has to do with the black rat snake we found in the yard Friday? If he is the reason I hope he keeps up the good work.

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Hmmm,

I've been seeing a lot more toads and garter snakes than usual this year.

I always thought snakes ate their prey head first. The picture contradicts that as does the snake I saw awhile back in my yard that was eating a small frog.

And yes, I harassed it. The choices were that, or running it over with the mower.
