Benny, the Incredible Fly Fishing Weiner Dog, has had the pleasure of fishing with many of you and shared many laughs. At fifteen, Ben's days of running streamside trails and leaping logs are long over and he spends most days now relaxing in his doggie bed. The last few months have been tough on Ben (and me) but he's doing better lately after some health issues. He still loves fishing and I get him out when I can. Although nearly deaf now, his eyesight is sharp and he'll bark at the sight of a rising trout. Summer is Benny's time and bass, trout, and sunnies are waiting to be barked at.
Here's a couple of pics of Ben from yesterday - typically in the grass.

Cherish the times you've got with beloved old pets.

Benny is incredible. To fish with him is to love him. Hoping he has a great summer of fishing.

Great sentiments Dave. Wish you many more good days with Benny. Dogs are truly man's best friend. Fishing dogs are even more special. In fact, I'm quite jealous. I have a field bred springer which essentially means it is uncapable of sitting still for any lengh of time. Do not let my avatar fool you. She is great in the house and with family, but when I take her afield for training, hunting or fishing, she is perpetual motion. Great for bird hunting, not so great for fishing. Unforetunately, that means she does not get to accomplany me on many fishing trips. I keep telling her she will get all the swimming she needs at the end of the outing, but she's not buying. Tried tying a 6 foot lead around my waist earlier this spring while fishing the ditch on Big Spring and ending up swimming with her. Last weekend, she accompanied my on at 10 mile trail bike ride. Took her fishing about an hour later thinking that she would sit tiredly by in the back. Perhaps I should have biked further or perhaps a less active breed is needed here. I can always bike further, but owning a dog other than a springer will never do.

Great post Dave! I read this post to my wife and 20 year old daughter (she affectionately refers to this site as "Flybook") this morning. It's really hard to read your post without getting a lump in my throat. My wife had a tear in her eye as our 9 year old Bassett hound was laying there beside us on kitchen floor. So many people can relate to this subject. Very well done!

Thanks for a beautiful post! My lab mix, George, is also 15, nearly deaf, and has some significant joint problems. He doesn't seem to mind so much and enjoys sitting in the grass watching the world go by. I like to think he is reminiscing about his days as a champion squirrel chaser, and keeping an eye on me to make sure I remember all that he taught me.

Ah Dave you have touched a cord. Many one this board have my dog "Chooch" and like Benny, she too is getting up in years. Hopefully, you get to enjoy many more days with Benny. Although I have personally never met him I know we would be good friends.
Not everyone will understand what a blessing a good dog is, but I stop before I walk out the door each morning, scratch Chooch's head, tell to be good, and give her a kiss on the forehead. I look forward to every day I get to fish with her.
