2008 and 2009 were pretty good years. 2010, and 2011 were inferior compared to them when talking about the run.

Just stopped into International Angler today and they said Poor Richards smoked 17,000 fish last year. Take that how you want...

WE need more up here. It did rain last night but the streams were very low last night and will return to these levels quickly.
IMO the cat and conny probably have fish.

I'm sure there's fish in some of the smaller tribs. Not to spot burn or anything.

Walnut gauge spiked to about 170 today. I like to fish it in 100-150. It'll get the fish moving a bit, but by no means is the run going to really start. We need a 3-4 day period with 2.5" of rain... and 2-3 of those.

It's coming soon though.

Agreed. It always seems impossible that it will happen with conditions, but it happens every year like clockwork.

i think anglers get dumber every year, hence the lower catch rates. i.e. videos of fly fisherman basically walking on fish and making horrible roll casts on top of them.

Sure, we can assiduously three-quarter our wets down stream, mend, and wait out each fly swing, which to my way of thinking, anyway, relegates to the angler to role of butler, rather than nemesis.

Just got back,Take my word, More fisherman than fish this morning. Need more than an inch of rain over one day. Fwiu boaters have been getting them in 40-50' of water last week. Lake temp has droped about 4*f since last weekend. now 72*

5 Rings,

It does get crowded. I have a friend who comes from Pittsburgh and complains about what he calls the "Erie Pinch." He'll be all alone at a great spot. Then two guys'll show up and straddle him. Then they gradually squeeze in until he leaves in frustration, or just can't cast or fish.

But it's not alway a big crowd in Erie--especially if you get away from the mouth and all the bridge pools. Also, try a weekday. Way less pressure on a Tuesday.

I've had people try that with me, it usually just takes a "WTF" aimed in their direction for them to get the hint that I'm not going anywhere.
for the most part though, the majority of anglers are polite, regardless of what equipment they are fishing. I've had the good experiences far outnumber the bad. an open mind and good atitude go a long ways when fishing there. some people need to remember that it's just fishing, that's all it is, and we're all there to try and enjoy it.

Our trip is booked for Oct 25-28th. For my buddy and I it is like waiting for Christmas. Been tying for our trip for a week or two when I can and that always starts to build the excitement.

BTW, I see you are from Berwick. I work in Danville and live in Lewisburg :).

It's nice to meet another steelhead angler from the area :) I just moved up here in May, from Centra PA, for a new job, live in Berwick and work in Bloomsburg, very nice area.

"Erie Pinch?" That sounds like a version of the world renowned "Jersey Block."

Well good news fellas. Word out is that there was heavy rain this weekend, and the streams are blown out, with cooler temperatures to boot. This was confirmed by my one buddy, who is a local in Erie. If logic is any indicator, this should be the first major run for the season. There is another few days of heavy rainfall forecast next week, so that should be another big run, should be a decent number in the creeks by late September, with more to come.

Already got ProCure on the way, with a few hundred flies tied, now into some experimental flies. You wouldn't believe some of the flies I come up with for steelhead, but sometimes the key is throwing something at them that they haven't seen yet.
