I saw this yesterday on Yahoo news - no doubt, an enormous fish. I've seen photos from the late 19th century of sturgeons caught in the western US that were larger.

The article implies that the fish will not be a record. It seems they got a length and girth measurement. I believe the IGFA has records now for C&R(?). If more than one person fought the fish, however, it won't qualify.

Incredible. What a huge beast.

I read stories about the early settlers in Idaho pulling sturgeon out of the Snake River with horses, then putting them on a wagon and going around to people's houses and everyone would cut off a big chunk of meat.

I don't think the Eastern sturgeon got as big, but at one time there was a commercial sturgeon fishery at Upper Black Eddy on the Delaware. The Hudson had a commercial sturgeon fishery too.

The best thing about this story is that it was released!
The pictures is all one needs to mount that trophy.

About ten years ago my brother was on a business trip to Idaho and got to fish for sturgeon in the Snake River. He caught one. It was 7 feet long and estimated to weigh around 200 pounds. He got a photo and the fish was released unharmed. He said it was quite a thrill.

I was just there at the beginning of the month. I knew I should of ditched the family and fished more.
