Help Finding a Fly Rod Builder |

I am looking to purchase a 10' 3wt blank and need to find an experienced fly rod builder in Western PA (preferably in the Pittsburgh area). Do any of you have any recommendations? Thank you for your help!

I second sandflys input. Kevin is a great rod builder. I have seen a lot of his work and you would not be disappointed.

Yes. Several manufactures have them listed. I am looking to start Czech nymphing and this requires a longer rod. I did my research and found an Echo 10' 3wt on sales at Cabelas for only $230 (retail $330 ish) There is also a $20 coupon on the internet if you spend $150. Great deal and rod. I had to make the move. Thanks for your help.

I am going to bite here. I am not an experienced czech nympher, but I am a good nympher in the Humphries type of method. I have been reading a bit about it recently just to see what it is all about. Do you really need a 10' rod, though. From what I have read it seems to have more about nymph selection as far as weight goes and slowly leading the rig with a sighter. A foot longer would not really make that much of a difference. I would suggest trying it on a 9' to see if you like the technique before you go all in. Further, why a 3wt? Seems like you would want a heavier weight like a 5 when you are tossing 2 or more heavily flies. Please do not think I am being critical, just curious as do not know a ton about it. After reading though, I realized I have czech nymped before without ever knowing that was what I was doing.

But for euro style techniques it is just right in many situations. The problems could come if you're stuck with that rod and you've got risers on the far bank and there's a breeze. Appreciate all the comments. I have done much research into this by reading Czech Republic, French and Poland web sites. After all these guys are way ahead of us in this technique. All these guys use 2-4wt 10 foot plus rods. If you look at the top rod makers Sage, Gloomis, etc. they all have started producing rods for European style nymphing and all their rods are low weight 10 footers. You do not need a special rod for Czech nymphing, but a longer rod will make things a easier, especially when you need to reach over a fast run and hit that pocket on the other side. A 10’ is the rod of choice for most experienced Euro nymphers. You also need a very light rod since your rod holding arm will be fully extended most of the day. I have a 5wt 9' Z-Axis that I have been using for the last several years. I high stick nymph (Czech style) with this rod so I am looking for something new. This technique is gaining more popularity in the US solely because it produces more hook ups. If you like to nymph and you have never high sticked I highly recommend it. You will catch more fish. The Europeans dominate year after year in the World Fly Fishing Championships and they all use either French or Czech techniques.

and some wonder why I went wirh a 11' 3wt. rod. these rods are light in the top 2 sections with a lot of back bone in the lower 2 sections. I have had mine out casting and it throws 50 foot cast with the wind. (always windy here). As soon as pine drops some more I will be out with it nymphing..

I built a 10'4wt back almost 20 years ago. Nothing new. Thought it would help me out with the extra length in my nymphing. Yes it will help you keep some extra line off the water but when the wind picks up you accuracy will suck when trying to make a long cast. The average caster will not be able to handle a 3wt in the wind with long casts. I'm sure Bob can. I sold the rod the 1st day out with a client. If you are set on a long rod you should go with a heavier line wt.
