While fishing this afternoon, my camera fell in the water. It was off at the time and I immediately removed the battery and camera card. I have not tried to power it up. What is the best thing to do to try to save it? Thanks.

Hope that it was waterproof.

In all seriousnenss though, I have heard that rice works. I know my cousin dropped her cell phone in a lake and they baked it for 30 minutes, and it worked perfect. A quick google search came up with a ton of information. Here's just two sites:

Yeah rice works. Biggest thing is to not turn it on till it is fully dry. Its not water that ruins it, its short circuits. If you try to turn it on and everything isn't dried out, you'll ruin it. Leave it turned off for a week or something. And rice. Rice absorbs moisture.

Good luck! Since it wasn't turned on and you removed the batteries, I think you'll be okay!

Get silica gel beads from a craft store and stick it in a bags filled eith those. They are what is in beef jerky. Or if you have a dehydrator for
Drying fruit and such stick in there and run it. I dropped my iPhone in a stream and did these and it is just like new still.

Suggestions you have received already are good ones. I'd add to get a can of compressed air used for computer cleaning and gently blow air in any openings to help remove as much moisture as possible.

Good Luck!

Rice does work, as an EMS provider I have had many cell phones drop in puddles, streams (on rescues) pools, you name it probably got it soaked....a bag of rice will soak it up!!

After destroying 3 cameras, I finally bought a waterprrof camera. Last time I got the camera wet I'n not sure if that killed it, or cold did, either way I own a new camera.
Open all the access points and let it dry out for a few days, you can try putting it in a baggie with some of the silicone stuff in a bag that you get with electronic gear. That should take care of the rest of the moisture.

Ive gone threw about 12 cell pones this way and one camera. I would put it in a bag of rice for a week (just to be safe) 3 days is probably long enough but better safe than sorry. If for some reason it does not work. get a waterproof one. I have a pentax optio w90 and love the thing. It has about 2 hours of underwater footage so far with no problem.

Thanks for all the info. It is currently sitting in a bag of rice with 4 packets of desiccant (just to play it safe).

IMHO Olympus makes great water proof drop proof freezeproof cameras.

after it dries out, hook a lanyard on your camera, buy a pelican waterproof camera case with an attached carabiner, close the pelican case with the lanyard loop hanging outside the case, clip the lanyard loop in the carabiner on your vest or pack. Neither your camera or case will hit the water again

X2 on the Olympus, I have a stylus 850sw. I also sometimes carry my Nikon SLR. Now if that gets dunked, I'll be beyond pissed.

I keep my little Canon Power Shot attached to a bino harness and then I tuck it inside my tee-shirt, out of the way. This way it can't get wet unless you totally fall in. Works nicely.
