German browns in Germany--advice? |

I'm heading to Germany soon and will stay for a month or so. For part of that time I will be in Berlin, and am in touch with a fishing club there that is going to help me get on the water. Just out of curiosity, anyone here ever fish Germany? Any advice? From what I understand wading is verboden, C&R is not generally the rule (although I will be practicing it), and in some rivers it's dries only.
Anyone here with experience fishing the hinterland?

I vacationed in germany - but didn't fish.
According to our tour guide, fishing just isn't very poular there - in spite of some beautiful looking streams. And they do have a country wide rule stating that you have to kill every fish you catch. No idea how strongly it is enforced. But I remember thinking that if I ever did try to wet a line there, maybe I would just see to it that the hook points are "accidently" broken off of my flys

I went to Germany back in 07. Their hunting and fishing laws are very different and strict compared to ours. I stayed in southwestern Germany near the French boarder. I encountered a park ranger on a hike and had a really nice conversation with the man. He said in order to trout fish, one must take a course which is about 80 hours long. However, he said the next time I come to Germany, bring ALL fishing licenses and to be able to explain anatomy and trout behavior. He explained that one must keep a fish and it must be given away (I believe to a designated restaurant). I tought it was really weird lol. Anyway, south western Germany looks EXACTLY like the Appalachians, but with awesome castles. The streams looks really fishy.
Hope you get a chance to catch a few!

I fished in Germany, but that was40+ yrs ago when I was stationed there with the US Army. The streams are great looking but everything is private and you must buy your way.I fished a lake in Bavaria from the patio of the American run hotel I was staying at.Caught a bunch of rainbows that were stocked, gave some to the employees of said hotel and received many thanks.
Now that I think back I don't remember seeing anyone else fishing, must be for only the wealthy. We have it very good in the USA.

Not to get OT, but why can't we have stuff like this! lol At least pass a small test of some sort about regs, ettiquete, fish handling, identification, etc. before you can get your license.

Thanks guys.
From what I've learned so far, catch and release is fine with barbless hooks. At least that seems to be the case outside of Berlin. It also seems that with a TU membership and a US fishing license you can purchase a 1 week pass. Then you just have to "rent" access from a local fishing club. I'm in touch with what seems to be a great one over there. They manage a stream with wild native browns. Kind of excited to try for a native brown! Although apparently the stream gets a little weed choked this time of year.

ok ok im back... fishing germany was an awesome time! I have some info that I can send you, email me mkerstetter at gmail dot com
It was a great time when I did it a year and a half ago, there were definitely a few things that were different but a course was not necessary as a tourist, only for a resident. make sure to bring 2 photo's for your license as they will need 1 for their records and one to put or your license (definitely a good idea, i just wish I did not find out while standing in the municipal building, during closed for license sales hours, and unable to speak german.)
