I'm curious to hear if gas prices will dictate how much fishing you do this year? For me, it may have an affect on my NC fishing trips, as Potter is about 5 hours away and my Silverado guzzles (12 mpg) gas!

depends on how my local streams fish, if they are fishing good, I'll be more likely to stay local, but if they are crap, I'll still drive a bit, just make up for it by drinking cheaper beer and eating from the value menu!

I'll venture about 60 miles. The round trip will use a little less than 1/2 tank of gas.

I just changed fishing vehicles this past Fall, but the MPG was about a wash. Went from a Colorado (3.5L, 21 MPG) to a Tacoma (4.0L, 20 MPG). I give both of those vehicles credit, because that's exactly what their window stickers said they'd get.
I have a couple longer trips scheduled...Jam, long weekend in the NC in June, and I'll probably make at least one or two single night camping runs up to the Poconos. I'd say that's a pretty normal year for me as far as traveling to fish goes, adding the Jam this year I guess though. I'm lucky to have both decent trout and WW fishing within 45 minutes or so from my house, and that's enough to keep me occupied most weekends.

I can't complain, I'm in the middle of a lot of good water. If it's not needed I try not to take my truck though because it gets half the mileage of my car. My goal for this year is to take the motorcycle any chance I can.

wills - Yeah, if you can find the real stuff it makes a difference. There was a Lukoil by me that advertised and sold ethanol free gas for a while, but that stopped a couple years ago. That was back when I had the Colorado, but I I could routinely get 22-23 MPG with ethanol free.
No question the Tacoma's a better truck though. It's a good bit heavier than the Colorado and has a much more powerful engine...so even though I'm seeing 1 MPG less in terms of mileage, I'd still argue it's a more "efficient" vehicle.

Normally it would, but I just replaced my old clunker with a car that should get me close to 40 mpg on trips... and the fly rods fit.

Not really. Most of my fishing is within 100 miles.
So figure a 200 mile round trip. 17.5 mpg in my FJ - 11.42 gallons. the difference between $3 and $4 gas would be $11.42 for the trip, might have to eat breakfast at home and a PBnJ coming back but wouldnt stop me from going.

It has changed my plans as to where I will fish. I had plans on getting back to PA as much as possible this year. This is now not as likely to happen. I will have to ration my trips so that I am able to make the most of my time off. It sucks! I really miss many of the stream I grew up fishing.

I drive a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a V8. I'm just lucky I live within an hour of some of the best streams in the state. I will still fish the same places I always fish.

thats what I just bought a chevy cobalt for. My only big expense is driving to Idaho and back. when I am here most streams are within 20 miles of where I live and in Idaho the 8 months I am there I am normally fishing with someone and one pays for gas one trip and the other the next. I needed the cobalt anyways, The hemi ram getting 18 highway SUCKS going across the country.

I have a 2005 Honda Accord (work car) which gets awesome mileage, but my fishing vehicle is a 1994 Chevy Silverado which eats up the gas. I won't reduce traveling this year to fish, but I may use the Honda sometimes to help cut the expenses.
