The wife and I are trying to plan a 2 night 3 day fly fishing trip. We want to stay in a cabin, cottage, or a bed and breakfast, close to some good fly fishing. We live in south central PA and are looking for something no more than 3 hours away. The idea is to relax, hang out, and fish mostly but hiking or horseback riding might also be nice. Right now I'm looking at Harmans North Fork Cottages in WV http://wvlogcabins.com/ Just wondering if anyone has been there? We've been fly fishing for about a year now and are basically moderately experienced beginners... We might want a guide but it's not necessary. Also, we are thinking budget here.... best bang for the buck! Not afraid to spend money but we dont need luxury. I'd appreciate to hear your experience. remember this is a husband and wife trip, not a weekend with the guys... Thanks in advance!

Seven Mountain where the jam is being hosted is a good bet. Close to a ton of fishing and you could hire a local guide.

Check out "The Feathered Hook" fly shop in Coburn. I think they have a bed and breakfast. Penns is right around the corner. I'm thinking it shouldn't be very expensive. I think they have guides as well. You might even be lucky enough to find horseback riding around Woodward or you could do some hiking or bike riding on the old railroad bed and check out the tunnels anderson things. Pretty sure the fly shop has a website.

I'll give the feathered hook a +1. not only is it a bed and breakfast and a fly shop, there is a bamboo rod maker in the back, and one of the best beer drinking porches in central pa to relax under!

I stayed with my family at the Massanutten Resort a couple years ago near Harrisonburg, VA and had a blast. It was a 20 minute drive up to fish a number of mountain streams along Skyline Drive (along the AT)...I just studied some maps and went prospecting and got into fish everywhere I went. The place we stayed was on the resort, but was not 'part of the resort', which I think saved some money. Definitely worth checking out.

We've been to Harmon's and the fish are pellet fed and VERY easy. If that's your thing, fine. Another alternative is this...

It's on Elk Creek and close to many more excellent streams.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

+1 for Centre Mills. Tons of things to do in the area and you get to fish a private stretch of class A Elk Creek. I hear the accomodations are awesome. Rolf, is right, you got Elk, Penn's Big Fishing, White Deer, etc within a 30 minute drive and Spring Creek about 45 away.

My wife (doesn't fish)and I stayed here and it was great. If you like log houses, completely restored, it's real nice. Spruce Creek is right there and the Little J is a mile away. http://www.fairfieldfarmguestcabin.com/Home.html

How about the Manor Lodge at Slate Run? Last March we couldnt get to our cabin due to ice on the roads, so we spent a few days at the Manor. Decent accomodations, good food, good bar, great scenery. Several streams to fish in the area - Slate Run, Pine Creek, Little Pine, etc. And beautiful scenery to explore.

Check out some Camp Grounds, they usually have cabins to rent. They're clean and warm. You can rent them from over night to several weeks.

Cool idea, next let's spot burn our best drinking establishments close to the best accomodations where they also have the best streams!

Duh! One other place to consider is Fishing Creek Angler in Benton Pa.
http://www.fishingcreekangler.com/
The owners, Lee & Maryann Gaul are incredibly nice, there is a fly shop attached to a B&B, Fishing Creek is within one mile plus you have Ricketts Glen State Park nearby. Good restaurants and horseback riding if you feel like it.

Good Luck,
Rolf

I have been to Harman's Cabins a few times over the years. It is a very nice place and you definitely don't need to be an experienced fly fisher to catch big fish there. It is a private section of the river and they stock it with large browns and rainbows.

It can be tough in the summer since the water gets low and warm, but there are an few springs that enter that section that can provide some thermal refuge.

PM me if you want more details.

that area is beautiful down there, plus u dont have to limit ur self just to that section of water...smoke holes isnt to far from there and another hour or two drive so and u can be at the elk, williams, cranberry river or u can go in the other way and hit up savage river (md) or barum which has really good fishing...if u do go to harmans check out smoke hole caverns...u cant go wrong with ur choice
