So it seems the newest thing is trendy fly fishing themed clothing. There are probably three or four of these new companies marketing products and in the latest issue of TIF is advertised yet another.

$24 T shirts.

$27 long sleeve T shirts

$25.00 hats

I thought Simms prices were crazy.

Seriously, who is buying this stuff?

That's still cheap compared to prices 20 years ago for trendy FF clothing.
Like TVs ,somethings are better bargains these day.
And I am talking dollar for dollar not inflation adjusted.

Dear CPR,

I don't know who is buying them but it definitely ain't me.

I'll admit to owning a couple of Cabela's fishing shirts, the ones with the long sleeves and all the pockets. They weren't cheap but they are worth the money.

I even wear them when I'm fishing at the beach, I'm old enough to appreciate that a sunburn is NOT a fisherman's badge of honor for a well done long day of fishing.

I have a couple of pairs of the convertible pants too. As far as I am concerned they are the best thing going for wearing under your waders.

That's pretty much the extent of my fishing specific clothing. As far as hats go I probably have 100+ baseball caps. Any one of those makes an acceptable fishing hat.

Regards,

Tim Murphy

Would most of us buy these? No. Would we receive these as presents from our wives, mothers, grandmothers, aunts, sisters, female co-workers? Yes. Would we prefer a fishing tackle gift card? Of course. Should you ask if it's ok to exchange? At your own risk.

(I presume you are not talking about those nice brushed nylon fishing shirts with big pockets that can be washed in a bucket, hung up to dry and ready to go in an hour or less during a camping trip)

Buy smart. I have a ton of this stuff. I have purchased every piece from a clearance rack. The only Simms shorts I own, I got for $10. Zipp off fishing pants and fishing shirts go on clearance at sporting goods shops like Dicks every Fall. They have Columbia and their Field and Stream brand that get marked down to next to nothing. Most of that dry fit stuff is pretty comparable. I found quite a bit of this stuff at TJ Maxx and Marshalls and it almost always ends up on their clearnce racks because people don't know what it's for. Sams Club has a brand (Nature Gear) they sell as well and I can usually pick up a shirt or 2 off their clearance rack each Fall. I certainly would not spend extra $$$ on this crap and not have the money to spend on gear.

As I recall it was said, "It's better to look good than to feel good....and you look absolutely marvelous"

In any event, I don't know that dri fit cloths look good, but when hiking numerous miles on the creek, at the end of the day...they do feel good.

this is the correct answer. red truck and sierra trading post are great places to catch blow out "last years model" clothing. red truck has a pile of big name brand shirts for $10 right now. hopefully $10 is cheap enough for most of you.

Hmmm, I have tried a lot of the warm weather gear from Cloudveil to Columbia and I still have not found a synthetic fiber shirts or pants that are as comfortable and cool as super light long fiber cotton. I will either go with the cheaper Columbia stuff or the feather light Filson shirts which are my favorites. I don't know if Columbia still makes Lander Pants, but they are one of the lightest, easiest to move in pants I have ever had and they dry quickly and are inexpensive. There are lighter synthetics, but the just don't feel good next to my skin when I am fishing and I don't go with tees because I want more sun and bug protection and the feather lights are ideal in that regard, however they are pricey. If I want to go cheaper the Columbia shirts and pants are a great value and you can usually find them on sale.
