1st steelhead of the year was on 12 Mile January 3rd.

1st brownie of the year was on Clear Fork (in OH) on Jan 29. Our brownies are stocked in only 3 streams in the state as fingerlings . They generally are pretty nice looking fish by the time the grow up over a few years in those streams.

Looking forward to some PA wild brookies and brownies in the near future.

New Years day I was about to leave the Tully skunked and then I thought I would toss a red and white streamer and I fooled this guy.

Here are my first of 2011- albeit from FL.

Last night was awesome- incoming brisk tide around a lighted bridge fender which set up great conditions for fishing. Typically, this is the ideal setup for snook fishing as they love the bait fish to get drawn to the lights and ambush them from the pilings. I caught a fish on my first cast which was refreshing.

Saltwater fish for the most part really smack your flies. Pretty much a slayfest- caught many fish. Caught many ladyfish, several trouts and snook on shrimp and clousers. Don’t think it matter what you threw they were ravenous. It was so cool to have success in the salt because most of my forays turn into little more than a sun tan or exercise.

Sorry the pics kinda blow due to darkness and heavy fog.

Art- you got time for lunch at Phillipi Creek Oyster Bar or Capt. Curt's?

A-kid,
Cool! I'll bet you'll be the only Paffer - at least the only one who lives in PA, sorry Pete and GG - who posts a ladyfish as his first fish of the year. Any chance you can get out fishin with GG? That would make a very cool report by itself....we could use some sunshine and blue sky pics.
Wish I could join yuh.

Nice fish Akid!!! I've heard great things about lady fish. They are often compared to mini Tarpon, and known for their leaps. I hope you keep hitting them down in the Sunshine State.

I applaud you for posting that little guy. Makes me feel less self-conscious about my small catch. Caught last saturday in the middle of a snowstorm on Spring Creek.

I didn't get a photo, but I did break the skunk and get my first couple fish of 2011 on Saturday. It felt really good to have a trout tugging on the other end of my rod!

Those of you who know Big Spring well, how about chiming in with an estimate on when that rainbow in Jake's post probably hatched and when the parents probably spawned. I'm a bit puzzled on this.

I thought about that too. I would guess the the spawning season on Big Spring is more stretched out over a longer period of time due to the water temperatures being more constant and less influenced by the weather than most streams.

It would be a good topic all in itself, speaking of the spawning habits of Big Spring rainbows, or how they may affect or be detriment to the spawning habits of the native brook chars.
