Dear Abbey,

I have finally decided to come out of the closet with an affliction. I used to call my fly tying bench "organized chaos", even blaming my ADD. But this has gone too far, I've been in denial, and I need help.

It is a mess beyond control. Try as I might, it remains the same. Is there a 12 step program for this affliction? An encounter group I can join? Or do you recommend therapy? A 24 hour hotline?

Signed,

Hopeless in Shillington

Seriously, anyone else a bench slob?

By the way, I was not making fun of ADD (which I suffer from) or the 12 step program at AA, as someone very close to me suffers from alcohol addiction. Just made in jest.

Hopeless Hopeless,

You have no complaint
You are what your are and you ain't what you ain't
So listen up buster, and listen up good
Stop wishing for bad luck and knocking on wood

Signed Dear Abby.

(Props to those who know the song)

I usually just tie up a few and go fishing; takes my mind off the mess.

Dear outsider,

Unless you are buying the same material two or three times a year because you can't find it on your fly tying desk you've got nothing to complain about.

I do that with regularity. Anyone need any hot pink Ultra Chenille?

Regards,

Tim Murphy

I guess that's how I end up with 6 or so spools of 8/0 olive thread.
I just thought it was supposed to be that way. John Prine brings back memories.

If it aint broke don't fix it. What is one man's mess is another's treasure.....If it ain't a mess you ain't a tying.

Outsider: I'm guessing "Illegal Smile."

Other favorites: "Sam Stone," "Angel from Montgomery," "Paradise" and "Hello in There."

Give the man a cigar for the correct guess. Probably the most popular John Prine song. Might add Donald and Lydia to the list of favorites.

Actually I was listening to Dear Abbey while I was tying last night, and it inspired my post.

I wouldn't call mine a mess, I like to refer to it as organized chaos! Anytime I try to organize everything it takes forever to find anything, so I just work with it the way it is.

Don't know how I forgot his cover of "My Old Man". I relate to it because I was a baby boomer, and didn't listen to my old man as often as I should have. My father lived through the great depression, joined the Marines and fought in the South Pacific, and always put his children first. Spent countless ours with us fishing and hunting.
