The Delaware river club blog today bemoans CENTERPINNING on the WB. I must be living under a rock. Never heard of it. Sure enough, YouTube clues me in. Not for me. Am I the only one in the dark on this?

It became very popular for steelhead on the great lakes tribs. It's spread some from there.

The advantage is amazingly long perfectly drag free drifts. Hero drifts, if you will.

We like pinners, when they FF. But discussing pinning here is like discussing the 1978 Caprice Classic on a Camaro board. Well, they're both Chevrolets aren't they?

Centerpinning is a very effective technique, but i have fished among pinners up north an had days where they couldn't pin anything an my friends an i would have banner days, then other days where they were just kickin butt.
As for pinning an Bead fisherman...it aint flyfishing.Last I checked this was a flyfishing forum

I'm certainly no expert. In this case my 2 cents isn't worth anymore than that. But my impression is that it's very effective for what it does, dead drift nymphs under a float over long distances. It is not, however, very adaptable.

I'm sure you "can" do just about anything. For instance you "can" fish dry flies with a casting bubble on spinning gear. But dries, streamers, small streams, etc., centerpinning ain't the way to go.

Just checked it out. Do these reels not have drag and you palm the fish the whole time. Kind of a neat rig. Are these rods 10'?

It has a lil switch that engages the reel so it wont back lash but you more or less palm the reel, rod are usually very soft or slow by fly rod standards they are usuallly listed as noodle rods generally over 10 foor an longer an will handle very fine mono 4 pound is not uncommon an usually guys prefer Maxima maybe a flouro carbon tippet .

So there is no fly line on these outfits. Kind of neat. I like using my fly gear but found out the hard way that 5 wts are very tough to move steelies. I bought an 8wt redington cross water but never had it up there yet :(

You might want to check you TAP bylaws or talk to your dad before you go investing in one. It is not even close to traditional.

I found out about it by watching guys up on the Salmon River.

There's a guy I work with that makes pinning rods and has a cool youtube tutorial video.
His website is:
http://www.troutpin.com/

He's always slaying trout by pinning.

I think there's a time and place for everything and there are times when a pinning rod will beat out a fly rod simply because of the perfect drift. I've only ever tried it once though with no luck.

Mike, no offese but a 5 weight unless its a Trout Spey an used on the Erie tribs where the steelhead tend to be smaller has no business on a Steelhead/Salmon river, usually during the salmon run beginning as early as late August into the the second sometimes third week of October there will be Kings running as well as Cohos, Kings being the bigger brutes , for steelhead there are Skamania strain summer run fish as well as early fall run fish, when the kings are around 9 weight is almost standarda 10 weight is even better if you dont want to run up an down the river chasin fish an beating your self to death.Medium action rods fare far better than any fast action rod.
After the 3rd week of october most will switch to 8 even 7 weight rods usually 9 foot 10 footers are even better if you can find one, also fast rods suck, use a medium action an you will do far better. any questions feel free to pm me .
as for the the Centerpin reels it really depends most folks will use only mono, guys i know that have been pinning since the late 70's use a lil backing an then all mono. no fly line is used at all .

Was just looking at picking up a combo. Hey not tradtional but why not I say. Like here in nj most do not troll for stripers but in maryland that's is all they do. To each your own. Better to be prepared I say and times do change.
