I snuck out to fish for an hour last evening, and slipped on a sharp rock. It hit me right in the shin. Hurt like hell.

I walked it off and continued fishing. It was a little sore, but I didn't mind it that much.

When I was driving home, my leg felt wet. I figured I ripped my waders. When I got home, I found my leg wet with blood. I have a deep puncture wound on my shin, and it really sucks. I'm limping all over, and it stings. Might have to see a doctor.

Anyway, it was a tame shallow stretch. Just a reminder to be careful out there. I believe I was tying a knot while walking, which was dumb.

Get some hydrogen peroxide or anti-biotic in it. If you cut yourself on a river rock you could get some nasty bacteria in the wound. Anyway, hope it heals up soon.

I am putting neosporin and antiseptic spray on it often.

Somehow, the waders were not ripped. They have a small abrasion. but that's nothing aquaseal can't cover.

Thanks, I hope it does too...

Sorry to hear that Jay. I banged my kneecap on a rock around the first of May and its just getting back to 100% now.

Be careful out there...

Well, I'm glad its a manageable injury, Jay. But I gotta ask you how much worse it might have been if you'd been wet wading rather than had waders on.

I tend to cringe a little when I see you (as you often do) advocate that folks wet wade. Generally, I don't think it's a very safe thing regardless of how good it feels.

There was a guy (Bob Q.) who used to post on an earlier incarnation (late 90's)of this forum. He was wet wading a smaller trout stream somewhere a mile or more from his car. I forget where (Hickory Run, maybe) when he slipped and ripped his leg open on a stick. He opened up a pretty significant artery and ended up having to make a tourniquet out of a lanyard or bungee (or some such) until he could hobble his way out of there. It was a potentially lethal episode and it ended his wet wading days.

I'm not chiding. I have no standing to chide. I'm just telling you it makes me nervous to see wet wading advocated in a lot of situations.

All, as I said, offered in the spirit of concern rather than any presumption of having standing to get preachy.

I appreciate your advice, and I have been considering it. I am probably done wet wading trout streams.

Great advice! Heal quickly Jay. Just for the record, I NEVER wet wade. I like my ankles/legs protected from potential scrapes from rocks, punctures/cuts from branches/twigs, thorns, POISON IVY, and any possible snake bite! Although I've yet to see a rattler, they are in a lot of the spots I tend to fish. I just wear shorts to keep cool in my hip waders.

Jay-how the heck could you have a puncture wound without a hole in the waders?
Jeez-I would get holes in my waders just looking at a barbed wire fence.lol

You've got some good friends and some good advice so see a Doctor. When was your last Tetanus shot?

Pete,

I don't know how they didn't tear. Consider this an endorsement for simms. I'm confused how the rock cut me so badly without actually contacting my skin. Luckily, that should keep stream bacteria out, though I did get a bit of water on my upper body.

I spoke to my girlfriend's dad, a doctor, and he said how to clean and care for it. If it hurts tomorrow, I am going to make an appointment.

Wetnet,
I am up to date, luckily.

I never got past el-cheapos but the leaks cooled me in the summer and warmed me in the winter-
Have to smile at the no wet wading -
wait until they retire to the Sunshine State-

Wet wading is not for me either for these reasons. Take care of that leg Jay I'd like to fish Valley with you sometime when your free.
