I was flyfishing today and as usual the little black stoneflies were hatching. Whenever a fly gets close to me I have a habit of catching it and look it over to see if I can find something new hatching. Well today I caught a bug and I cant figure out what it is.
* It has 6 legs, 2 pair on each side of the body and 2 extending out in front of the whole insect. * Its wings are a grey and has the appearance of a black garbage bag streached untill it turns grey. * It has 2 tails that are grey * The main color of the body is a greyish olive green. * From the tip of its forelegs to the end of its 2 tails its about 1/2" long. Now that I finally figured out how to work my camera..I can post some photos of him. (His wings messed up but it was either messy wings or a crushed bug.. fat fingers) ![]() http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/008.jpg http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/007.jpg http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/006.jpg http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/005.jpg Here's some with flash..color em up a little. http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/009.jpg http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/013.jpg http://i1118.photobucket.com/albums/k618/Wholaverj/010.jpg He was hatching out of a rapid that was coming down into a large hole..as most flies hatching come from rapids.

I would call it a "blue quill" because that looks like what would imitate it well. So would a Quill Gordon, unless of course the trout can recognize it being too large to be considered food. As for the taxinomical name/species, I defer to the experts.

Well, from the post, I'm not sure whether you're a total beginner, or know the basics and were looking for a more exact ID.
So, start with the obvious. It's a mayfly. Dun stage. All mayfly's have the same basic body shape, number of legs, etc. Now for the exact ID, which is more difficult. Nice pics. 2 tails, plain wings, minute hind wing. Based on that plus size and color, it's in the Baetis genus. There are a large number of species within the genus, but they're all pretty similar for our purposes, and we call them all blue winged olives (BWO's). Note, there are other genus's, with significantly different characteristics which are important for fishermen, which are also called blue winged olives. The common name covers a lot of different bugs.
