I recently got a TFO Clouser 8'9" 8wt fly rod. Wondering if anybody out there has tried one for steelhead. My typical steelhead setup is either a 9' 8wt TFO TiCr or 9'6" 6wt Gallatin Onyx.

I know the 3" will make a difference in ability to mend and fight fish, etc. But I'd be interested to hear any thoughts.

Not a steel guy here but honestly, I'd think if you already have a 9' 8WT, why bother with another 8WT rod three inches less?

To be sure, I'm not one to sweat details in rod modulus and length very much. It just seems to me that you've bought an extra rod as a backup for essentially one you've already got.

The clouser rod is a extremely fast action rod ment for throwing extreme heavy streamers . I think that its the exact opposite of ideal steelhead rod. A "soft" rod is a plus when trying to protect lighter tippets. thats why I'm building a med. action 7wt. for erie my winston 8wt. is a broomstick.

that rod is a beast... i have it in a 10wt
it is really made for shooting line and belgians-style casting
not nymphing
it is a fast rod for casts that keep the rod loaded through the entire cast

... any rod can catch fish, but this one was not made for steelheading
