What would be the downside to matching a reel rated for 12 wt. line to a 9 wt. rod? I'm thinking about using the rig for stripers and blues and possibly salmon. If I ever got another rod for this type of fishing, it would be heavier than 9 wt., not lighter. My thinking is I could then use the same reel on both rods. I would just get another spool for the reel when it's matched to the heavier rod. Am I thinking straight or is this the bourbon talking?

Your 12WT reel should work fine.

My thoughts would be that you would gain some extra weight on the 9wt rod, and I'm not sure how that would affect the balance of the rod...but it would work and give you some flexibility between the two. I'm sure you'll hear a myriad of opinions, but if you have the 12 wt reel and the 9 wt rod, test it out, see how it feels in your hands. In the end, that's what matters more than anyone's opinion.
