I've been using 8# mono for chucking Clouser Minnows (wonderful things). Also, use about 5 ft of 8# mono and about 4 ft of 4 to 5 X for nymphing.

Anyone else use this or something similar?

I use 9 feet of 4 lb fluorocarbon level leader for nymphing on a straight line drift similar to czech nymphing, but without the complicated muli-fly setup. Kinda like a high stick upstream chuck and duck with a shot above the fly. The level leader cuts thru the water effectively without the need or expense of tapered leader and tippet. Just find a 100 yard spool of the lightest fluoro you can find.

The big downfall with level line is there is no transfer of power from the fly line to the leader....if its short 4ft. and less there's no noticeble differance, after that you'll see a lack of turn over of the fly.. for a good transfer of power the general rule is 60% butt, 20% mid, and 20% tippet....anything over 6 foot I would recommend a tapered leader..
