Due to weather conditions i do not have to work today. that is a shame. i always wanted a job with snow days. there is nothing like an unexpected day off and all my personal stuff is done all i have left to do is get ready for the early hatches april, may, and june. any one know where i can find a back caddis larva pattern. or all caddis larva the same(grannum,Cased, etc.) to me all the patterns are the same just named different. well almost the same. that chucks patterns has a cased and my instructor showed me the grannum and they are the same.

Schools out for me. I knew as of 8:30 yesterday morning, and then we only got about 2 inches, which is all cleared up now.

I tie 3 cased caddis patterns:

1st (and easiest) - straight shanked hook. .35 lead wire for weight, one piece tied paralel to the shank. At the eye, I tie in olive micro chennelle burn at the end, and black hackle for legs. I take the thread back to the bend and tie in a clump of turkey tail and wind it forward. I then coat the turkey with clear fingernail polish.

2nd - The first week in May, I go to the stream with a ziplock bag and collect the sheded stick caddis cases. I spray them with craft bond and let them dry for a day. Using a streamer hook with comparable size to the case and wrap with lead wire. Using cheap dubbing I build up the body just big enough to slide the case over tightly. Then I elmers or super glue the dubbing and slide the case over. Once dry, I tie a creamish body and legs, like the caddis is tring to grab ahold of something.

3rd - Similar to #2, but use those little stone cases and smaller hooks -- obviously.

Of course if you don't want for the caddis to shed their cases, you can take a small stick and poke the caddis from the bottom of the case out the top.

I’ve never had a great deal of luck fishing a cased caddis pattern.

Attached is a typical free-living caddis larva pattern, but I don’t put the sparkly stuff on it like the tutorial shows. Just tie the same pattern in the size and color of the larva you are trying to imitate. (See attached link)

The pattern that brings home the bacon most for me when caddis are hatching is the LaFountaine Emergent Sparkle Pupa (ESP). (See attached link)

The other LaFountaine caddis pattern, the Deep Sparkle Pupa (DSP), is effective before or during the hatch and fishes deep. It is tied the same as the ESP without the deer hair wing and tied weighted (wrapped wire or bead, or both)

These are not the easiest flies to tie, although it is rather simple when you get the hang of tying the loose sheath of Antron around the body. I feel it’s well worth the effort.

BTW, the colors for the early hatches are:

All black ESP & DSP size 16 -18 for the Early Black Caddis (Chimarra)
Brown & Bright Green (brown is the color of the head) ESP & DSP size 12-16 for Grannoms (Brachycentrus)

PS – Yea who, looks like the squirrel shown in your avatar has no reason to gather nuts – they’re built right in. Reminds me a lot of Chalie.

Good luck.

I've caught more trout in the winter fishing a peeking (cased) caddis then anything other than big buggers...I think they are one of the best winter/early spring patterns...

This looks a lot like what I use...

What a great day to be stuck at work. I should NOT have bothered coming in. It's freezing rain until later in the afternoon, so I'm basically stuck here all day.

I'm right there with ya Jay! I stayed last night because I had to be here in the morning. Turns out the roads were fine this morning, but i have to be in at 6 tomorrow, so it looks like I should see home by sometime Saturday afternoon. Oh well, at least I have a casino across the street if I get bored.

i too am stuck at work.i work at a motorcycle dealer,so it really makes NO sense for me to be here.my boss is snowmobiling in canada,so we're short enough i had to come in.

i should have snuck some tying material in!

How can you work w/ that across the street? i know where i would be every other friday.

If anyone in the SE wants to know what the roads are like, they are fine. I'm going to shade out of here a bit early after all. ***, meet bar stool.

Me too.... There is an IPA waiting for me. I just have to finishing approving time cards and I am outta here.

Yep, just got done closing a handful of bugs. I've got the same plans, but substitute the IPA for a stout or porter.
