Tied up a few of these in this color, black, and olive. Anyone else have any cool patterns I can try out? I'm always on the lookout for a sweet tie. Gonna hit the Susky above harrisburg on the kayak tonier ow morning, hoping to get a few takes on this!

It will catch fish!

It appears the fly has big "doll" type eyes? If it were me, I'd drop those. Hellgrammites don't have such big eyes. As for colors, if you look at helgy nymphs, they tend to run 2-3" in length and are brown/olive with dark brown/black heads and thorax. A good ratio would be 2" of olive body and 1" of black at the head. Helgy flies are often tied in all black or with black bodies and, although they catch fish, such flies don't match well the color pattern typical of our helgy nymphs here in PA. Olive marabou is tough to beat. Dislodged helgy nymphs swim with an undulating wiggle motion (so do craneflies but that's another thread) so a long marabou tail really works well.

Dave, I think that the doll I is on his vise...That would just creep me out! But yea, Dave covered it all basically.

Thanks for sharing; here are a couple more to try. The products on them are from Flymen Fishing Company.

Murry's hellgrammite pattern's a good one, quick and easy to tie. ( Harry ) that is. Dc410 had a thread on that one in here recently.

use uni-mohair to wrap a body and use a black zonker strip. i use this as a leech but think it would be deadly on smallies. SUPER easy to tie. I have a lot of luck with this pattern on trout as well.

Ugly, has movement. Should work. Good luck.

This is the patter I use.

I've found all black does the job nicely for hellgies.

look up fred smith at bass pro in hbg if you are looking for the best hellgrammite pattern period.

I agree, Fred's Helgrammite is a good pattern. I have some in the box I might be able to dig out & post a picture, although my supply might be getting low.

I'll save you the trouble. Recipe? Talk to Fred.

Not the first time I've checked the remove button.

Not the greatest picture or tie for that matter but you get the point.
