I am an Intern at Ohiopyle State Park, and as a project I am trying to improve a section of Meadow Run. I was just wandering if anyone here has any experience with stream improvements and knows who I can get in contact with about permits, money, and ideas about what type of improvements to do.

I am new to doing this time of a project so I have been trying to do as much research as possible. If anyone here has any information that may help, or can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

I would contact the local Trout Unlimited chapter first. I believe it would be the Chestnut Ridge TU . If that is a stream they work on they will be able to help.

I would also contact the County Conservation District watershed specialist. HE will be able to help you with grant or funding inroads. If there is a watershed assotication of the County or the stream contact them too.

As a start I would interview all of the above and determine who is working in the watershed, what the important areas of concern are and where the potentials for funding are. This course of action will eliminate a tremendous amount of frustration and flatten the learning curve.

Good luck,

Maurice

These are good suggestions for people to contact. That TU chapter is quite active.

Before you start, be aware that making alterations to stream channels requires a permit. It's illegal otherwise, regardless of good intentions.

PA Fish Commision and the DEP also. The fish commision will probably send a biologist out to help with the planning.

thanks a lot for all of your input, I am now in contact with chestnut ridge TU, and they are helping. Over the next few days I'll be making calls to the PAFBC about permits and such. Hopefully it all goes well.

I favor going to the local TU chapter. They have a knowledge of the stream and they have a knowledge of improvements. IMHO the best project would be to plant trees in the headwaters. I favor that over any rock throwing, all rock throwing does in most cases is cause more rock tossing every few years.

excuse my ignorance, but what kind of improvements do you have in mind for Medow? I can not think of a better stream as far as bank stability and structure go.

I'm with on that one ryanh! Maybe he can take the project area a little farther up stream!

Not sure what ever happened here

Al,

You still with the Chestnut Ridge TU? Was wondering how the meeting on the Dunbar project went the other night.

Any updates on this? I would be willing to help out with the stream improvments. I helped out 2 weeks ago on a Mill Creek project, trib to the Loyahanna. Forbes trail TU

acristickid,

Never heard anything, was curious myself. But I do know that Dunbar Sportsmans Club has a project planned for this weekend at Dunbar Creek. If interested PM me, I'm planning on going. Went last year and really felt good to help out and I met a lot of good people.
