If anyone knows of any Internet site that maps the location of Marcellus wells, please post the link. If "waterdogs" are going to monitor these wells, the first step is to know the locations.

I haven't found any such website. Someone with some IT skills could get the latitude/longitudes from DEP, and create a Google Maps mashup.

There are several groups in this area that are working together as coalitions to deal with the landmen working for the gas companies. I'll see if I can dig up some info.

In the meantime, maybe some info from the link down below might be of help. Also, I know of a lawyer that is helping folks with reviewing their lease agreements free of charge.

Fascinating map Festus. I suspect most of those balloons are permits, and not actual drilling. I did find aerial view of one active site though, Jennie Haag:

Just for scale, a random mountain top mining operation:

Gone4Day,

Thats possible. How did you get it to cover areas other than Tioga?

I looked at some wells I know the location of, and can state factually that they are already drilled and working. I have a real hard time seeing them on satellite view. So those are obviously not in the main drilling stage when the satellite photos were taken, meaning they either haven't been drilled yet or the drilling is over and done with.

Zoom out? Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. It only seems to cover the NE part of the state though. I just threw in the mountain top mining image for comparison. I hate coal mining.

Turns out the aerial view in Google is pretty old, from 4/11/2005. So most of the Marcellus drilling has probably occurred after it was taken. That would explain the absence of active drill sites. I can't find a more recent images, either. I'd be curious what they look like after the rig has left.

The DEP EMAP is pretty cool too.

Ah, ok, sorry, it was I who was confused. Your second pic was in WV, but it wasn't a gas well, so it all makes sense. Are both those pics at the same scale?

As for what they look like after drilling, here's an area I know.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=41.563188,-79.209065&spn=0.015285,0.027509&t=h&z=15

Each of those little side roads with circles at the end are gas wells. You can't see the tanks very well, but they are there. I'm sure the pads were bigger, these are 30 year old shallow vertical wells. As you said, the pictures are old, so the new Marcellus ones don't show any activity yet, at least I couldn't find one that does. The main difference with Marcellus is the depth and horizontal drilling. More pipe = bigger equipment and more room for water trucks, etc., but it also means only one pad is needed for a larger area. So instead of 10-15 wells in a small area like this, you'll get 1 bigger well pad.

That map is very good in showing the locations in Tioga and down into Lycoming. That's what I've been looking for.

You can zoom in and see exactly the location, and what the stream drainage is.

I was hoping someone had a similar map for the whole Marcellus region. There are some in northern Centre County, but I don't know the locations.

Does anyone know who created this map?

Volunteers at www.pagaslease.com. A lot of good info on that site.

I guess the link I provided yesterday doesn't work in explorer. So here are direct links to the PA maps. They also have similar ones for NY and WV.
Beaver County
Bradford County
Central Mountain Counties
NE PA
Somerset County
SW PA
Sesquehanna County
Tioga County

And the DEP EMap, a cumbersome but useful tool.

Gone4day,

In the SW region, there's two listed back to back, starting with "Herman." The first says "pad still visible on satellite view", and the second says "rig visible on satellite view". The descriptions are accurate.

Thanks for the maps!
