The Laurel Hill Creek watershed is under stress from a number sources. Many of its tributaries are impacted by acid rain. Ongoing development has placed high demands on both surface and groundwater. A fair scientific watershed management plan needs to be established for Laurel Hill. The area has over 2.5 million recreational visitors a year. In addition, the stream is heavily stocked and has documented trout reproduction. Chestnut Ridge TU in conjunction with several partners has been awarded a grant to study the water use and availability within the watershed. The USGS will provide the scientific component of this plan. It is hoped that water withdrawals can be managed in manner which will not jeopardized the future existence of Laurel Hill. The chapter will assist in preparing the plan and by attending meetings associated with the project. Soliciting land owner participation will also be a task assigned to the chapter.
