An alternative to hydro fracking?

should we buy stock now?
seriously, great to see new ideas come along, if it works, which hopefully it will, and hopefully companies will use it when available.

Now if they'd just design a natural gas engine.

Chaz, I'm sure you realize that they have them. The problem right now is lack of dispensing stations. The Vast majority in the US are fleet vehicles. There's a huge push for Propane dispensing stations, also. Most propane dealers who have storage own at lest one propane-fired vehicle.

Honda has a natural gas powered Civic available.

When I lived Boise 20 years ago they had all the buses on natural gas. There is no excuse that we are not driving nat gas vehicles....except the oil lobby.

It's a classic chicken or egg situation.

People won't start buying natural gas vehicles until fueling stations carry natural gas. Fueling stations won't carry it until people start buying natural gas vehicles.

As was said, natural gas is VERY common on fleet vehicles, including many bus systems.

It's more of a chicken and egg issue. Cars don't sell because there are few to no places to fuel up. Gas stations aren't investing because there isn't a large market of cars. The infrastructure investment is huge so it's not going to happen overnight.

Most large oil companies are also in the natural gas business. They would profit either way. Are you aware of specific government rules or regulations that restrict autos from using natural gas or propane in favor of gasoline?

Natural Gas is compressible and able to be stored in a tank, much like Propane.
Personally, I'd rather have a Propane vehicle.

5 of the top ten earning companies in the world are oil companies. That's why we use gas and oil instead of ANYTHING else.

Tom, exactly! these companies may have stakes in the nat gas business, but their investment and income from oil is so HUGE that they are NOT going to abandon that anytime soon. I laughed when Romney said we would be energy dependant within years if we elected him. No way, those companies are NOT going to drop their stake in the oil that they have invested so heavily in and make billions and billions of dollars from. Only way this country will be energy dependant is if people stop being so wasteful with that energy, stop buying suvs that get 8 miles per gallon, quit building and living in 5000 sq ft houses that are wasteful to heat and cool, quit using that suv to DRIVE the kids to the F'n bus stop everyday, which is at the end of the F'n driveway(that one really gets to me, lazy ***'s, no wonder we're so fat)
when demand for oil drops, only then will these companies start investing more in the alternatives. energy independence? yeah right, none of us will ever see it.

Could it be that gas and oil are the most economical sources of energy, the world has figured this out, and because of the large demand and supply they are big business.

Oil and gas a re simply millions of years worth of solar energy converted to a chemical form that are deposited around the earth. They happen to be in a form that we can easily convert back to heat.

Romney isn't saying he will convert us over to another energy form. He said he would make us independent from non-North American sources in five years. Still a challenge but much different that converting to non-hydrocarbon sources.

of course, they are also "established" froms of energy, the technology to drill and gather is proven, the refining is proven, and there are thousands of industries that use the byproducts for thousands of other things.
that's why it's so funny when people in this country talk about energy independence, it's all BS, nothing more than marketing to get people on the side of the nat gas industry. Importing oil is not going to change one bit, no matter how much nat gas we produce.

There has already been a sizable change in imports over the last few years.

NPR no less

Why couldn't this trend continue?

Not only that, but the greenie's outcry about not signing onto decreasing our carbon emissions? The U.S. is the ONLY country on pace to meet the demands that everyone but us agreed to.

By the way, look at which companies are profitting most from wind, solar, geo, etc. They aren't trying to hold them back, they're the ones that are pouring money into getting them off the ground.
