More "Newbie" Help: Stocked Trout "Attitude"?

It's been 20 years since I fly fished, and all of my trout experience was with wild populations. So now I'm about to embark upon local fishing in the Neshaminy, where the fish are stocked, and it looks like my first chance will be a few days after some are released.

So when they are dumped, how do they disperse? Do they all "go with the flow" of the stream, or tend to go against it, or disperse in all directions?

Do they tend to cluster or scatter (as I would expect)? If the latter, over how large of an area?

Are they well fed, coming from the hatchery, or do they begin feeding shortly after getting over the stress of transport and release?

Am I overthinking this?

My understanding is most newly or recently stocked trout generally go downstream a bit, and most will be found 200 yards or so downstream of the stocking point.

Again, newly or recently stocked trout tend to cluster. One stretch of water may not contain any or many fish while another may be loaded up.

If never fished when the great white fleet is actually stocking, but my understanding is they are very hungry and begin feeding soon after being stocked.

I've caught stockies at least a mile from where they were put but I doubt that could be true now with low stream levels.

With the current levels, they will be in the same bend they are stocked at. After being stocked, they are likely to travel within a few hundred yards of their spot, but Mike informs us that this is rarely upstream.

They stop feeding the stockies a few days before transporting them. They will be hungry and should be eating the day they get into their new home.

In my opinion, find flies that best resemble power bait and creepy crawlies and you will catch a few stockies. After a few weeks, again in my experience, they acclimate pretty well. They will behave a lot more like stream bred trout in terms of foraging, though still be less wary of shadows.

i agree with afish. Had a fish biologist at a stocking tell me most stockies stay withing 300 yds of where they are put in. Some may go a lot farther but the consistant data is about 300 yds

When and exactly where are they stocking the Neshimany?

Are stocked fish who are just released usually 'dumbed down"?

Recently stocked fish don't know what food is. So they try just about anything. With time, they become accustomed to the local food. So for fresh stockies, keep switching and see what works.

As far as wariness/spookiness, that is largely bred out of them, they may not ever recover it fully, even after years in the stream.

I've seen different scenarios for how quickly they eat. Sometimes within an hour or so of being stocked, other times it's days. I'm sure water temps and other such factors are at play.

They generally wait a day or two to move, then move, and reestablish a position and hold there. How far that move is varies. It can be up or down but is more often down, specially in low water. A few hundred yards is normal, though a few go much farther. In acidic waters, it is farther, sometimes miles and into the next stream.

I've noticed that once water temps begin to warm up, the fish start going upstream more than down.

Also .. how do we find out the stocking date, time and location on the nEshimany?

Is it a good time to fish right when, and close proximity, when they dump them in?

Not looking for a challenge as I just wanna hook my first fish and gleefully post it for you guys

Put in county of interest, and time range of interest. Hit go. Look at stocking schedule.

Sometimes they just give you "week of" for inseason stockings.

I have the paper copy. what is nice about your link is the coordinates that link to google maps when you click them.
And based on the schedule, My neck of the woods is getting a fresh batch this Thursday.

Yes .. those GPS coordinates are great

If I am reading that correctly .. looks like the Nehasminy (Bucks Cty) will not be stocked for the remainder of the year??

When I hit Pcray's link for Bucks I get Body of water, upper limit, lower limit, stocking evernts

1) What exactly do these limits mean to me?

2) Did they stock those exact locations listed (upper/lower)?

Example

Lower Limit: RICHBORO ROAD BRIDGE (SR0332): Lat: 40.224280, Long: -74.964130 .. this is where I would like to fish, did this exact location get stocked?

Does this stay consistent over time meaning that I would like to go out locally on the Neshimany and they last stocked on 4/4/12. Should I stay w/in 2-3 hundred yards w/in the spot?

Here's a 2006 study on 2 NEPA steams that indicates stocked trout can travel many miles from the stocking point.

The Daily Bag Limit

I also realize that this study has some limitations in that it involved a small number of trout on only two different streams.
