My Dad decided he wanted to buy me some flies recently, so he want to Cabela's and asked someone at their fly shop what he should get me. Told the guy that I mostly go for trout, but that I was talking about sometimes going for bass. Among a few other flies (all of which generally made sense to me), the guy picked out a double bead prince nymph tied on what looks like an extra long size 8 hook. Very large. What the heck am I supposed to do with it? Can I catch trout on a nymph this size? What would it even imitate?

Yes, a large prince will catch trout. I liked fishing them in high, dirty water that often comes in the spring. The prince nymph is an attactor pattern, so it doesn't quite look like anything exactly; it might look like a large stonefly or mayfly nymph to the fish.

Yes high water or fish it as a stonefly pattern.
