Saturday marked the latest attempt to unravel the mystery, that is the Yough. Joined by Albatross and former board member Andrew, we started our float at roughly 7:30 AM.
With a fairly constant water temp of 59 Deg F, but a strong flow of approx 1900 CFS, I was hopeful that we could boat some of the river’s strong fighting fish.

There are two things that Alby is known for; Catching large fish and breaking fly rods. It took less than a minute for him to display his ability, sadly it wasn’t with a quick fish!

Both Andrew and Alby started quickly to boat a few smallies, but the trout were proving to be their typical, hard to catch, selves. Thru the occasional showers, we pounded the banks, and midstream structure with streamers, and buggers, but to little success.

Although there were a few olives around the fairly heavy rubber hatch kept the bigger pools devoid of the rising trout we’d hoped to find. As the day wore on, swallows showed a lot of activity over the faster water. Close observation confirmed decent numbers of Isos were emerging. And quickly, Alby proved his talent, by bringing two stunning rainbows to net!

Despite the tough sledding in the fish catching department, this trip was still enlightening. We continue to build on our knowledge of the river, and the company, for me, was top notch! Thanks go out to Andrew and Albatross for sharing a good day on the water!

Stay tuned for more information as I hope to make another trip or two in the coming weeks!

Word is when Alby buys a rod, the seller disclaims any warranty coverage. He's been flagged!

Sadly my 6 weight didn't survive the launch. Can I borrow your rod Jack?

A great day on the water with Dave and Andrew. The fishing was slow at times, but the possibility of a Yough Ness Monster always makes for an exciting day.

We noticed the swallows working Iso's over a riffle and finally noticed two trout break the surface. Not dry sipping rises, but emerger chasing rises. I tied an Iso nymph as a dropper off my Iso dry and was able to bring two magnificent rainbows (17-19 inch) to hand in about ten minutes. Thanks to my two partners for their excellent net work!

Andrew is sporting quite the goatee there. I didn't recognize him at first.

Great report - almost like being there on the float. The rainbows in that river just look terrific - nice colors and deep, healthy bodies.

Any size to the natives? (ie the bass)

FI, the heavy release from the dam had the water cooled down nicely for trout. The bass were mostly the size your glad to catch, but might be a little too small to brag about! ;) I suspect the bigger bass were too cold to chase streamers

I think the photo brings out their colors more so than being there in person does. All the rainbows I catch look like fresh steelhead. They are bright chrome with a faint lateral stripe. Could just be the ones I catch though. I suspect its from the dense baitfish population in that river being a main dish for the gamefish. Sweet fish, guys.

Ok, before I schedule my next weekend work shifts, when is this going down again? Catching a couple of fish like that would be sweet but not as sweet as a bikini hatch. What size were they? . Looked to be size 6.

Good stuff guys. DaveS, we have a rubber hatch on the Allegheny here in town but it's not the kind you're talking about. I'm gonna go wash my hands.

Shane, we can debate East vs West over an adult beverage or two.

PWK, Nope, those fish ARE brightly colored. I've got the chrome ones too. They seem to be from the deeper, slower water. They look like Delaware Rainbows in 3/4 scale. I've seen several colored fish now, but I think they all came from broken water. Interesting!?

Kray, call me when you get back and we'll work something out.

TDB You just keep thinkin' that LOL!

Turkey, DON"T post any pictures in the "Hatch " forum!
