Valley Creek - 3/27
From Philadelphia, PA
Headed to Valley Creek for the first time ever today. Perfect day for afternoon fishing.
Managed to catch my first wild trout ever within the first half hour at Valley Creek. Enticed a 6-7" wild brown to come out of hiding and take a grey flashback scud I tied up last night. Though small, it was a gorgeous fish.
Unfortunately, that was it for the day. Lost I think 6 flies to the rocks and branches on the bottom of the creek. Day ended worse than it began, but all in all I'm happy to have landed one on my first trip to VC. Saw a fellow with a spinner rod take a nice sized brown on his first cast, but that was the only other fish I saw taken out of the stream today.
Waited to see if any BWO activity would bring the fish to the top, but despite some decent insect activity I didn't see any risers (not sure I'd know BWO from any other hatch, to be clear, I'm relatively new to all of this - especially dries).
Drifted a couple of size 12 black woolly buggers, size 14-16 flashback PTs, size 14 BH hares ears, and size 12 olive/tan scuds through a couple of deep pools I would have bet my right arm had trout at the bottom of them - but couldn't get any of them to take.
I dont have a thermometer, but the water felt warm for this time of year - I'd guess well over 45 degrees if I had to, but what do I know. Water was crystal clear.
