I took a day trip out to the Upper Savage river sunday. The reports were that good brook trout fishing was to be had on tiny black stoneflies, so I reluctantly drove past the lower river and fished above the lake. My buddy joined me, and we arrived to twenty degree temps, shelf ice in some locations, and a lot of slush in the stream. The water temps were in the 30s, but as the day warmed the conditions improved.

I did not see any hatches on the upper savage, but the fish were sitting in the likely holding areas. We fished dry droppers for the better part of the day, mostly using the dry fly as light indicator for fishing some of the nicer 2-3 foot deep runs with prince nymphs and pheasant tails. Fishing was as good, as one can expect with the conditions. We caught about ten brookies throughout the morning, and we switched over the lower savage around 1pm. The lower savage river conditions were good, and I saw plenty of tiny size 20 stoneflies and a few midges. The fishing was slow, due to the cold water, but we managed a few more nice rainbows and my buddy took a cuttie and a brown to round out a grand slam.

Overall, it was a great trip given the time of year. I cannot wait for the Olives, as they should be showing up on the southern PA limestoners soon!!!

Neat report. Some serious winter fishing here.

That brookie in the upper photo is a mighty nice fish - looks to be close to a foot long.

Beautiful pix and trout!

Thanks so much. This just might motivate me to pick up my fly rod and turn the stinkin' TV off!

A couple weeks and March is here!

That fine brook trout in the first photo is exactly what MD is trying to get more of out there. DNR took (takes) a lot of heat in changing the regs. More see:

Great report. I need to try the Savage some time. Pictures shook some of the winter cold out of my bones.

Agree - very good report on brook trout management. I started a new thread in the Conservation forum linking to this article.

Thanks DGC.
