Lackawanna River, Lackawanna Co., 3/17/2012

I went out for a few hours early Saturday afternoon. First, I stopped by A&G Outfitters to check in with Adam and Greg. Greg said there was more bug activity in the lower part of the River but no really good dry fly action. That should kick in any day, assuming there is no big rain event. I tend to favor fishing the TT section because it's more scenic (relatively).

The air temp. was in the upper 60s. I did not check the water temp. The water was clear with visibility to about 3+ feet. The sewage stench was moderate. Early stones, small caddis, midges, BWOs and (I think) blue quills were in the air. Nothing prolific, but they were all flying around for most of the afternoon.

I started at the Sanderson Street bridge in Scranton. I dragged a big streamer through the deep hole just above the bridge, but no takers. Then, I switched to a 2 nymph rig. Again, nothing. There was one trout that rise every 5-10 minutes or so. I fished my way upstream for about 1/2 mile. There is nice nymphing water in that stretch. I pounded the fishy looking spots, but, again nothing.

There was one other angler about 75 yards above me who looked like he landed a few.

The strange thing is I didn't even see a spooked fish. But, there's the Lack. Some days it seems barren and others...

My buddy and I have a reply for when folks ask how the fishing was and we couldn’t shake the skunk: "It was a beautiful day."

True Dat! Amazing, perfect weather to be on the river.

BTW, here is a report from a local who practically lives on the river: The Scoreboard

We did not inherit the land from our fathers, we are borrowing from our children.

Explains it well. Somedays it is amazing and others, where are the fish?
