August Update on the Y

Recent Rains allowed us to get a couple of float trips in on the Middle Yough this week. Taking temps the whole way down showed that the unless you are fishing early in the day, you want to focus your trout fishing on the first few miles below the dam. The River below that is warming pretty quickly as the sun gets high. Temperatures just below the third island at 12:30 on Friday were 71.

So the program this week was fish for trout early and switch to bass after lunch. That program is working out well.

All the usual suspects are in the drift at the moment: yellow drakes, cahills, bwos, slate drakes, caddis (small tan and black), and a few crane flies. Lots of golden stones in the shallows right now, too, so don't go stomping through there to get to the deep water without first taking a gander at what's going on in the skinny stuff. Lots of big bass eating these guys on the Middle right now.

Bass fishing is silly right now. In fact, you should all just chase them.

The two young gentlemen featured below fished with us this week and were both fly rod first-timers. Dad booked the trip--lucky kids! (My dad didn't even fish.)

Have fun out there,

As a quick update for those looking to fish the river, it looks like the USACE are beginning to draw the lake down, so they've bumped the daily flows up to 500 cfs. For now at least--until the lake runs out of cold water--that will keep the water temps good down to below Ohiopyle.

Afternoon and evening fishing has been good: ISOs and BWOs are what's happening. If you don't see any fish eating on top, go with a nymph rig matching those two bugs, you shouldn't be disappointed.

Other than that, all your favorite bugs should get a few fish as well.

Enjoy the remainder of the season,
