FYI. I found this posted on another site. I don't know the poster, or how true it is, but keep an eye out. I hope it's not true, or very isolated.

"Went out of Goldsboro on 6/7 and thought it was strange that there was a 14" bass squashed on the ramp. Chalked it up to someone being an idiot. As I went around I kept seeing a floater here and there, all reasonable size fish. When I got to the grass by the last island there must have been 50 floating in the slack water. Any ideas about what is going on? Anybody see that in other parts of the river?"

Yes, this appears on other boards as well. My first thought was the fish died from stress from spawning, but I've heard about fish kills with smaller fish as well. This can't be good news for the suskie.

FYI from another site on the Susky in the Hburg area. It looks like the PFBC is making a good effort to stay on top of the situation. I will give them credit for that - good to see:

"I just recieved a call from a gentleman named Chris that identified himself as the Fisheries Manager for the PFBC Region 7. He's also a biologist for the PFBC. He asked me to recant what I saw on the river. He has reported it to the PFBC Law Enforcement. He also said they're going to be out on the river the next few days taking water samples and looking for dead fish.

He relayed that it could very well be from spawning stress and/or the drastic heat wave the last few days. But he didn't like the fact that they're were dead small fish. He anticipated that the water samples would give up some more clues as to what the problem was. He was definitely more concerned about the dead smallies that we saw then any other species.

And like others have said, he said this has been a problem in the early summer for the last few years.

No matter what, I appreciate the fact that he took the time to call me back and find out more. I told him that their we're others that saw dead fish recently. He asked that others call his office and report any numbers of dead fish that you see. Maybe the PFBC is starting to care about the smallies in this state.......just hope it's not too little too late."
