i imagine rain-x might help you cast further also, since it should reduce the amount of friction between your line + guides.

oh one more thing. I treat the entire upper section of the rod with rain-x, taking care to get enough around the guides too. I think the ice builds up first on the rod, right under the guides. So putting it only on the chrome guides is not effective.

I don't recommend the sucking method.
There are nasty microorganisms and parasites in water. It is true the numbers are suppressed when the water is that cold, but they are there nonetheless. PS I stopped (well, may be greatly curtailed) the bad habit of holding a fly in my mouth and cutting line with my teeth for this reason too

I just looked up this post (gotta luv the advanced search feature) and I'm answering for two reasons. To bump it up because it is timely advice for this time of year. Next, because I'm laughing my a$$ off at some of the comments. Jayl, you got right to the heart of the matter! I was drinking my coffee and didn't expect your answer and it went down the wrong pipe.
