Fox,

I never had to go smaller than 26 on that stream for single midges. Size 26 Adams, black, and cream seemed to cover it. I'm surprised that the 24 gn didn't seal the deal, since that worked 90 percent of the time for me in that situation.

The only practical advice I can give is that regardless of what they are eating, they will take an ant as well in a few months. Hell, they may now.

If I'm wrong about this being the stream I think it is, my apologies.

Edit: another point I should make is that the bulk of my fishing there was before it became a zoo, so maybe they are tougher now.

Fox - try a size 26 Al's Rat. Tie 2' of 7X fluorocarbon tippet to your 5X dry fly leader with a triple surgeons knot, and grease the whole leader down to the 7X knot.

Watch the curves in the leader that is floating, and when they straighten, game on.

Via pm with fox, I found that I know this particular pod of fish quite well. I told him the same thing... Well, I fished them in 24, but yeah. Those fish will eat the rat for sure.

Just tied up a couple. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks everyone. I am just excited to try all these ideas. If I fail it won't be from lack of effort.

I anxious to hear how this works out. I haven't tied anything smaller than 22. Even tying them that small I've bent the hook in half just putting thread on it.
I should never have got you all worked up about an up coming trip. You, my friend, need help! Size thirties...no wonder you can't see to thread them. You are blind from tying them lol.

Here's the original fly I tied up. Any "nice" comments are welcome!

Added another pic to give the size some perspective.

Looking good foxgap.
I see you put a tail on it. I don't - since midges don't have tails. It really doesn't matter that much though IMO.

I should also add that they can be tied with a parachute hackle wound around the post. I used to tie them that way. However, winding a parachute on a fly that small can be frustrating. And I found that the flys tied without one seem to float and work just as well for me.

You also talked about fishing a white midge - on penns I believe.
Just tie the same pattern - but with light gray thread for the body - for it. I've come across both white and black midges on limestone streams.

Good luck out there tomorrow!

Fox - after our PM you inspired me to tie some BWO's. These are not size 30. They are a huge 18 in comparison.

I used what I had and now realize what I need. I had two 18 scud hooks I use for zebra midges, black thread, white CDC, and olive antron.

I tied one w/ a micro fiber tail and one w/ a zelon shuck. I like the CDC tuft but I think the antron makes the body a little thick.

I'm not posting these photos because I think they're good ties. I'm new to tying. Critiques are welcome.

Papa, for being new to tying, I think you did quite well with what you had. The pic is a bit dark but the only thing I see is that the body might (and I say might) be a bit bulky. I prefer slender bodies on my mayflies. That said, I think those flies WILL catch fish.

Great day on the water. First fish of the day was on a size 30 black midge. He was about 13" but I did not bring him to hand. I misplayed him and he broke the tippet as I was about to net him. Oh well. Got must of my fish on a 24 midge dropper and the 20 BWO on top. Thanks for all the advice.
