I like to go to a 9' on some small streams. I'd consider using a 10 or 11 footer on some less brushy streams.

Reach is critical on small streams, especially for subsurface. I go as long as I can comfortable carry through the brush.

I'd love to pick the scott up, but I just can't afford it.

I used to use a 7.5" 5 wt. It's nice to nymph with a stiff rod on small streams. alot of times the 3 and 4wts just don't drive it home.

Like I said, I'll use the biggest rod I can get away with, given the brush.

My favorite virginia stream has absolutely zero brush to contend with. It is in a wide canyon with large boulders. I like a 9 footer there, but longer would be better. I know of a few small PA streams that are pretty open too. A 9 footer is fine on most brook trout streams that I fish.

On the brushier streams, I am with you.

I have an 886. 8'8" 6wt 3 pc 4 oz. Serial number 34xxx. I use the rod for salmon and steelhead in small streams. Price is 325. If you are intersted in building a rod, there is a scott fiberglass 806 blank on ebay that would build into a very nice rod.
