In search of a cheap, used steelhead rod....

I'm trying to help an old friend get into some steelhead this year. He was up with me once last year but just with an old spinning rod and didn't have any luck with it. He has been out of work for most of the year and doesn't have the money to buy much in the line of fly fishing gear.

I was hoping that someone on here might have an old steelhead setup sitting around that they aren't using. Doesn't have to be anything fancy. Even an old Walmart special or cheapie cabelas combo. He probably only has around $30 or $40 to spend, and I may even help him with that. If you have anything like this you'd like to sell, please PM me.

Trying to dig something up for you. We could always try Joe & Amy too. They always work with me in such situations. Fly Fishing philanthropy if you will.

Redington Crosswater for $50 at Cabelas? Is that a combo deal or just the rod?

You could always go this route as well. 60 bills for everything isn't a bad deal. They do go on sale for around 40 though occasionally, just not right now.

Cabelas Cahill

PS

I'll pitch in some flies too.

That crosswater deal was for the rod only - it's sold out.

Last October, Cabela's ran their Traditional II series blanks on sale for $30. They also made a mistake, and listed their complete rods for the same price. I bought a Traditional II 9'6" 7wt rod for $30, and the only bad thing I have to say about it - it only has a 1 year warranty.

Beautiful rod, casts great, looks an awful lot like a Sage Z-Axis (it's not, though). Cabela's has them on sale right now for $79.99. Mine did very well on some pretty big steelhead last year at the Jam. It's a heck of a nice rod for the money.

Does it have a reel with line?

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm sure I'll be able to get him into something here... Hoping to get up there next weekend, but my buddy's first trip up with me will be the Oct. 9th so I still have a little time.

Well I have at the very least a rod for you. Scientific Anglers 9' 7/8 wt. I've got some lightly used 7 or 8wt line for it as well. The only reel I have is a Redington Rs2 5/6. Heavy reel that actually balances the rod well but I don't know that it will hold 7wt line and most likely not the 8 at all. I could cut down some of the shooting line to save spool capacity and still maintain a decent amount of backing. Let me know what you think.

Edit

There's always something like THIS as an alternative too.

That rod sounds pretty good.. how much do you want for it? I saw the cabelas cahill reel is on sale for only $9. Good enough for a beginner!

Not for steelhead in aint! For big, bad steelhead a decent reel with a decent drag is recommended.

Agreed. They will destroy that reel before lunch time.

The rod and line are yours free. I just picked up a Scientific Anglers Concept (disk drag) Reel 7/9 off of Sierra Trading to match the rod. That way there will be no issue with the line and backing. All I ask is reimbursement for the reel and shipping which comes to a modest 25 bucks. Sound fair enough?

And as luck would have it I picked up the last one.
