With so much time couped up inside due to all this d*&n snow, I've got all the tying I wanted to do for the upcoming season and then some.. Starting to get pretty bored and looking for an additional hobby. Thinking of taking up rod building. It must be pretty neat to tell guys you're fishing with a rod ya built over the winter.

Any recomendations on the best book to get to learn the basics??

There is a wealth of info on the web. There is much more than any one book could provide.

However, if you prefer a book, "Custom Rod Building Guide" by Tom Kirkman is a pretty good starting point. It covers all rod bulding, not just fly rods.

I agree with Kev. The internet is a great thing. If you can type it into google you can find just about anything.

No need to buy a book.

I'd suggest you spend some time here

Agree with both suggestions above. If the forum still has it's archives, that could be a good resource for you. I found answers to several questions there when I got started in rod building. Don't get caught up in some of the minutia, but just try to have fun with it. If you can tie flies, you can build rods. I usually build one almost every winter, just for a project. You could easily do it in a weekend, but I tend to drag it out for the enjoyment of it. I'll temporarily mount the guides and test cast, etc. until I get it how I want.

I found this series to be helpful also:

Thanks for the info... Ill definitely be looking around online for some info. I want to get a book too cause I have lots of time downtime to sit and read at work.

You can basically learn on the internet, but any of the Dale Clemens books will be good.

If anybody is interested I just picked up a copy of Advanced Custom Rod Building by Dale Clemens at Ollie's Bargain Outlet in Lancaster, PA for $7. List price on the book is $25. I've never built a rod before, but considering. Saw the book for a decent price & thought I'd share!

Art Sheck... Flyrod Building Made Easy... I think that is the name
