"The" is used for rivers. But not lakes, creeks, runs, brooks etc.

You fish Lake Erie. And you fish THE Susquehanna River.

"The" is used for highways and turnpikes. We drove down THE PA Turnpike.

But not for streets. We drove down Walnut Street.

Why? As with many "rules" and their exceptions in English, the answer is: Just because, that's why.

Fishermen calling Perkiomen Creek "the Perkiomen" is an informal fishermen's usage. Not that there is anything wrong with that. The word "creek" is dropped from the end, and the word "the" is added at the beginning.

But probably no one other than fishermen, or kayakers or other people who have some familiarity and affection for the creek use that informal name. The great majority of regular people would just say "Perkiomen Creek," not "the Perkiomen."

I still think as often as not, it is an affectation, as in " Yesterday, we fished The Walnut not far downstream from the Millcreek Mall water treatment outflow.."

With creeks and runs it may be affectation. Or affection. Yinz can figure out where the line is between those two.

But using "the" with rivers is standard English.

Better question...why does the "the" annoy people that live near Philly?
Is it bc they call NYC "the city"?

Perhaps you're Russian. In English, we often use a type of specifying adjective known as the "article" before singular nouns, as an immediate preface- a, an, or the. And the new one, teh.

Personal names for humans or animal pets are typically excluded from this convention. That's the principal exception.

I agree, it gets complicated.

Go ask someone from the Philly area to meet you in the middle of "The City" and you may end up waiting a long time, since you'd be standing on Broadway and they'd be standing on Broad Street.

By the way, I grew up fishing "The River." That river was the Susquehanna, since I grew up along it's banks. The River, the City, or Downtown has a different meaning, depending on where you hail from....

The Pine.

No one calls it the Pine, but I've been known to call it The Tiadaugton.
There are at leat 60 streams call ed either Pine Creek or Pine Run, it would be ludicrous to call any of them The Pine. People may call it that, but they get questioned by anyone that has a pine in their county.

I've been known to call it "The Pine", and everyone who has heard me state these legendary words knows exactly what stream I mean.

We often drive on The Turnpike in PA and in New York, The Thruway, but we never drive on The 81 or The 80 interstates up or across the State.

But in California they call their highways "Freeways" and in LA you often drive north-south on The 5, across The City east-west on The 10, and if you're lucky (or wannabe) you take The 15 to Vegas.

How do creeks and rivers differentiate? Is it width size or depth, or non of that at all?

Regarding "the" for rivers and not for creeks, I find that totally off base. I hear "the" for creeks all the time, though generally larger ones.
